Ben Roethlisberger “excited” about addition of receiver Chase Claypool
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger definitely was not excited when the team used a third-round draft pick on quarterback Mason Rudolph in 2018, one draft after using a fourth-round draft pick on quarterback Joshua Dobbs.
This year, Roethlisberger definitely is excited that the team used a second-round pick on receiver Chase Claypool.
“I honestly don’t know much about Chase other than his numbers and size, but [I’m] excited,” Roethlisberger told Ed Bouchette of TheAthletic.com via email. “I heard he’s a good, hard-working guy and a great teammate. I’m sure he’s excited to get to come share a [wide receivers meeting] room and learn from a great player like JuJu [Smith-Schuster].”

Ben backs Juju every time he gets an opportunity. I don't think Juju is going anywhere. At least not while Ben is around.

I have good hope that if the steelers want to keep JuJu,he will stay after this year and many more years after.

Ben looked over at the Packers’ draft, and was like, “Yeeeeea, I’m happy.”

I saw a funny tweet that looked something like this:
R1: second-string QB
R2: third-string RB
R3: third-string FB
R4: fourth-string DE
R5: fifth-string punter
R6: seventh-string longsnapper
R7: seventh-string waterboy

Juju will stay because of the Ben-jamins not Ben.

True, but I don't necessarily think JuJu is going to be dillusional about needing to be a top 10 paid WR. He hasn't really proven that he is at the Jarvis Landry type level, or DeAndre Hopkins, but maybe Devante Parker or Golden Tate level.
Ben should be excited about Claypool. The kid has size, speed, work ethic that you want on your team. I'm not buying the Calvin Johnson comps, but rather bigger body guys like Dwayne Bowe, Brandon Marshall or Jake Reed. I'd say Anquan Boldin, but Claypool is faster than Boldin ever was.

I’d be happy if Claypool turns out to be Martavis Bryant with a good head on his shoulders.

I have to admit, it made me happy too every time I saw one of these project QBs go to someone else.
This was the exact right strategy for 2020: go all in on Ben and make him happy out of the gate with a tall and fast WR... the kind he always asks for. It sends the right message to everyone.
Just like we were never gonna sign Jameis Winston to be breathing over Ben’s shoulder. I’m glad the Saints took that play off the table.
I guess I wouldn’t mind getting a guy like Josh Rosen, who is no threat to Ben, and who might MAYBE pull a Tannehill one day. I just probably wouldn’t give more than a fifth round pick in 2021 for him.

Same for me...Bryant had a big impact in his rookie year in 2014...They scored like 30 PPG with him in the lineup(10 games) vs only 20 PPG without him...Of course it was not hard to be much better that Justin Brown who was a huge killer for our offense in the first 6 games but still.

Yeah, I recently went down a YouTube rabbit hole watching Ben highlights, and I was surprised to be reminded of just how great of a weapon Bryant was for us. And every time he’d score a TD he’d spin the ball and cross his arms.
He was such a talent. Shame he couldn’t keep his priorities straight.

He was not Randy Moss as some said but he was a very good deep threat that gave space to others
He wasted his talent because he was too stupid...His attitude in the 2017 season was bad too.

He isn't. One was just a speed guy that tracked the ball well in the air. The other is a big physical receiver that can run short routes and get open by his route running and shielding defenders with his body, while also being able to stretch the field with build up speed and win 50-50 balls in the air.
Claypool is a more complete receiver, Bryant was more of just a one trick, speed receiver.

What an idiot. This draft was about right now, getting Ben targets and protection.
As of right now, we have 10 picks in the 2021 draft. It wouldn't surprise me if the Steelers trade someone for more picks to set them up nicely to move up to get the QB they want. Don't ask me who, but I expect we will be without a 1st round pick in '22.

This is what I expect for the steelers .... The last two MVPs (it might have been 3 if Wentz would have stayed healthy for the entire 2017 season) were QBs that he was less than 2 years after they were drafted ...The experts need to realize that it takes no time to develop a QB in 2020 if he is good.
Too many idiot and hot take on TV!

Re: Ben Roethlisberger “excited” about addition of receiver Chase Claypool
Too many Steeler fans getting butt hurt over comments that are not incorrect, IMO.
Did Ben endorse the drafting of Rudolph a couple years ago? No. Would Ben likely react the same way if the Steelers had drafted Jacob Eason in the 3rd? Not likely. So the Steelers management is looking to take a run at trying to get back to the playoffs with Ben hopefully healthy for a couple years before rebuilding at QB. Nothing shocking.
If there actually is an NFL season this fall and how that season unfolds for the Steelers and Ben's performance will impact what happens next season. I'm thinking Jamie Newman from Georgia might be the only decent QB around when the Steelers pick in the 1st round in 2021. Then again, he may climb up boards and be gone if he has a good season. But the QB of the future eventually has to be drafted.

The frustrating thing is the media that thinks and creates stories that this is Ben who made the decision to not sign or drafted a QB.
He's not the GM!

Burleson points to how Ben reacted negatively when Rudolph was drafted in the 3rd round a few years ago and that negative reaction impacted how the Steelers front office likely decided to not draft a QB in this draft. He didn't say that Ben made the decision. He said he feels like Ben's actions kind of orchestrated them not picking a QB in the draft.
I think a lot of fans that are defensive about Ben don't bother to listen to what is said in its entirety or read the entire article when somebody comments....they just look at the headline or listen to the sound bite and then just jump to hating on whoever dare fails to slobber glowingly on their favorite 38 year old QB who they still think can play like he is 28.

Who said or thinks that?
I even created a thread yesterday to find out if it is realistic for Ben to play at a good level in 2020 after his elbow injury.
I don't think Ben's reaction influenced the steelers to not draft a QB like Jalen Hurts this year ... The good decision for the steelers is to wait until 2021 with their first round pick and find out if Mason can bounce back.
- - - Updated - - -
I understand very well those who have doubts about Ben, since I also have doubts, but some seems to think that Ben has zero chance to bounce back and it is a lock which will be injured again even if he missed only 7 games in 2013 to 2018 and 2 in it was in week 17 and 4 others were due to the same injury vs Rams in 2015....

I mean how many threads are we going to have on this? What was the 2020 play then? You need a vet Qb for less than $3 million a year willing to be a back-up that can then turn into a starter if needs be or you need to draft a "franchise" guy. That's the media pundit play...so who fits those requirements?

Re: Ben Roethlisberger “excited” about addition of receiver Chase Claypool
What QB, in the history of all QBs, ever wanted to see another QB drafted or a defensive player drafted over an O-Lineman, TE, WR or RB?
I’ll give you a hint...there isn’t a QB out there that doesn’t want help on offense...

Another example of the myth that Roethlisberger often influences the steelers.
The Steelers have spent their first round pick in defense since 2013 (8 years in a row).

Here's a link to an article showing how many touchdown passes some great contemporary QB's have thrown to 1st round draft picks. Aaron Rodgers has only thrown 1 TD pass to a 1st round draft pick in his career. Pointing out how little support he has been given by the Packers.
Brees 104
Brady 105
P Manning 293
Favre 127
Marino 84
Rivers 35
*Rodgers 1
Roethlisberger 69
*Marcedes Lewis 2019
https://www.sportscasting.com/of-aar...nd-draft-pick/
I don't think it's as big a deal as they say, but it does make you think a little bit.
So much for Rodgers and Big Ben getting their way all the time.....

And much of the TD of Ben was by Miller and Holmes, who have been drafted in 2005 and 2006,so when Ben was young.
