Seahawks/Russell Wilson New Contract - 4 years/$140 Million
Russell Wilson cashes in
Seattle Seahawks and Russell Wilson have reached agreement on a four-year, $140 million extension that includes a $65 million signing bonus and makes the quarterback the highest-paid player in the NFL...
In addition to topping Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' contract as the richest ever with a new-money annual average of $35 million per season, Wilson's signing bonus also sets a record. Rodgers was first in both categories at $33.5 million and $57.5 million, respectively, on the extension he signed last summer....
Wilson was set to make $17 million in 2019, the final season of the four-year, $87.6 million extension he signed in the summer of 2015. His side had given the Seahawks a deadline of midnight Monday for a new contract and, according to Schefter, did not intend to revisit negotiations this year if there wasn't a deal by that point.

Ben not signing a new deal until Wilson got his deal sets the new ceiling above what Rodgers negotiated. Since Ben is not known for giving hometown discounts maybe he also will wait out the Chargers negotiating their anticipated new deal with Rivers in order to make certain he does not leave any $$$ on the table. :noidea:
Re: Seahawks/Russell Wilson New Contract - 4 years/$140 Million
Just 4 short years ago Ben's deal was 5 years @ 100mil... this next one is gonna make that look silly when it's 2 less years for probably near the same money.
Re: Seahawks/Russell Wilson New Contract - 4 years/$140 Million
Well, we're not going to extend Ben for $35M a year, so there's that.
I don't think this is a great move by Seattle. Wilson is pretty good, but far from the kind of player who is going to carry the team to greatness on his own. If they hadn't been incredibly, incredibly fortunate with several draft picks on defense, like the kind of luck you see once every 20 years in the whole league, I don't think they'd have even come close to the Super Bowl and Wilson would be a fringe starter.
The last few years are actually a pretty good representation of where Wilson gets you as the centerpiece of a franchise: Tier 2A team that goes one-and-done in the playoffs and sometimes misses them entirely if they don't catch a few breaks. Shit. I just described the Steelers with Tomlin in charge, but I'm getting off-topic.
I mean, I GET why they re-signed him; they did have that success, and he's kind of the last remaining piece of that, and his skills haven't gone off a cliff. So it would take some pretty big balls to tell your fan base, "look, we're giving up on this path, because even though it looks like we're kind of close to victory, it's actually a big tease, so trust us and believe in the process." Especially when most of your fans can't see that because their pea-sized brains can't process anything beyond "hurr-durr 12th man - coffee and social justice," or whatever it is people in Seattle do. So they give him the deal and people keep coming to games for another 4 years, and go aww, so close. Who knows, maybe you get that lucky in the draft again, but probably not.
This is basically just refusing to let go and admit you need to start over. Like if Curry, Durant, and Thompson all signed somewhere else, so the Warriors decided the play was to give Draymond Green $60 million a year. That's not gonna do it for you, sorry.
12th man, though! At least it'll be fun to see those idiots have their hopes crushed year after year.

Probably not 35, but obviously more than the 20 he's making now, so lets say 25... look at this pattern.
After Ben's rookie contract his deals were:
8 years @ 100 mil
5 years @ 100 mil
so 4 years @ 100 mil, which that final year is probably a burner just to push cap to after he retires after 3
Re: Seahawks/Russell Wilson New Contract - 4 years/$140 Million
If Ben is looking for $35M/year, he may have to play somewhere else to end his career. I hate to say it but thems are facts...lol
Re: Seahawks/Russell Wilson New Contract - 4 years/$140 Million
This may be unpopular, but I don't think Ben's extension will be 4 years. Maybe another 2 years/$50M to get through the end of the 2021 season, franchise tag if needed for 2022. I just don't think he's going to play any longer than that, and honestly wouldn't be surprised if he quit at the end of next year.
We would also be smart not to put ourselves in the position of either having a $25 million backup or $30 million in dead money at the end of his career, but we are not exactly experts in negotiating these things gracefully.

Where/when does it end? How long can ever new QB be a world record on top of world record?

Until the broadcast rights fees that feed the golden goose quit growing.
The league keeps figuring out ways to grow revenue from broadcasters desperate to overpay (Fox for Thursday nights after CBS & NBC said they were losing money on those games/ESPN for Monday night to get access to video for its non-live programming & to keep a competitor from taking those games/the rumored sale of Sunday Ticket streaming rights being split off from DirectTV still having the non-streaming rights after 2019).

But at some point the rights fees bubble will burst & the ever bigger paydays bubblewill burst with it.

The NFL today is the real fantasy football.
Re: Seahawks/Russell Wilson New Contract - 4 years/$140 Million
Next benchmark is going to be someone convincing a team to peg their contract value to a percentage of the cap.
Maybe if the next CBA goes smoothly?
Re: Seahawks/Russell Wilson New Contract - 4 years/$140 Million
Podcast rumors have the Raiders trading their 3 first rounders for Russel Wilson. Seahawks have 4 first round picks. I don’t think this actually happens, I am just amazed at the direction some pre draft conversations go. But let’s say this does happen, whaaaaat?

If they were going to trade him, I wouldn't think they'd go through the motions to give him this huge deal. Plus, I think it would make a potential suitor less inclined since the salary number has now been established. I would prefer to make the trade then negotiate the new contract with my guys.

NFL teams not known for breaking their contract negotiation model even if it is blowing up their salary cap when negotiating QB deals - combination of trying to reduce long term risk even for short term costs and simply doing it that way because they always have done it that way (Steelers a prime example of no guarantees beyond the signing bonus and first year of contract, which probably saved them from doing a bad deal that would have overpaid Bell)
These observations from SI
Well, the union has to do a better job on the collective side, but players with extreme leverage—such as Wilson—have to be willing to push the envelope in the face of teams hiding behind precedent. It appears Wilson, like Rodgers, could not turn his back on the riches thrown his way in the name of fighting team precedent.

Until teams start recognizing that they could probably save time and anguish by just anchoring their quarterback salaries to the rising cap, or doing something else on the creative front to recognize that this salary market in particular rises at a much higher multiple, they’ll continue to get hammered by relatively young, healthy and productive quarterbacks who have a keen understanding of the market....
The question is: When will quarterbacks squeeze teams harder and start opting for even shorter deals ...
The days of a quarterback immediately regretting a long-term deal once five other players leapfrog him in a span of 12 months are about to end one way or another. At some point, the almost comical increase rate on their contracts will slow down as the amount of money teams have to spend decreases.

It seems neither of the articles takes into account the franchise tag. For QBs, the franchise tag makes total sense for teams. The formula spits out a number that no NFL team will have trouble paying for a functional starting QB. So no matter how young, successful, and business savy a QB is -- the team has all the leverage. Don't want to take the multi-year extension? Fine. Two years of a franchise tag are coming your way. Don't want that? Sit out.
Everyone assumes the next CBA will be primarily about a split between cap dollars and profits to the owners, and it will. But I strongly suspect that the NFLPA is also going to bring an elimination of the franchise tag and gauraunteed contracts to the table.

This. And why would any team give up a 3 first round picks in one draft for any one player? Who’s Ditka coaching for now?

Doubtful the owners will give up the tag although they may limit it to 2 years since a tag for the third year already is prohibitively expensive - might also get the arithmetic for calculation of a second year tag adjusted to make it sting more for the owners. Despite all the big talk coming from the NFLPA the players will not lose a season’s pay by going on strike and the owners know it
As far as guaranteed contracts, isn’t that already allowed under the current CBA? If so doubtful the owners would agree to making guarantees mandatory rather than discretionary - as is the case with the tag the owners will say if it means that much to you go on strike - good luck with that
IMO real change will come when the rights fees quit increasing significantly each year, at which point the owners may be more amenable to tying contracts to the cap since the cap will not be rising as much (if at all) and the owners will not be giving up as many $$$ in a cap adjusted contract

You are probably right on the money with that. Giving rid of a third franchise tag basically costs the owners nothing, but is bargaining chip they can put out there so that the lowest common denominator thinks they are getting something.

This is why there will probably be a strike, or very close to one. As we have seen happening very quickly in the last year or two, market forces are quickly dictating a move in that direction on their own, and market forces apply just as much to the supply and demand for labor as to the supply and demand for goods and services.
I do not think the players' union understands this, or it will be under extreme pressure to get that codified into a regulation, and then we get to a strike. My worry is that to avoid that, they come up with some really shitty formula about guarantees and length of service, etc., that makes contracts and cap space even more convoluted - one of those deals that you can convince yourself sounds good when you have been sitting in a conference room for a week with 20 lawyers, but any normal person looking at it from the outside goes "what the fuck is this?" More rules. The NFL way.

You got that right. It will also be interesting to see if - rising cap or not - the total amount of contracts goes down significantly as the guaranteed part goes up. This could actually be a very good thing for the Steelers, since while the last couple years of big contracts are funny money for many teams, we tend to corner ourselves into paying full freight through excessive use of restructures. Get rid of that and I think we will be in better shape cap-wise in the long term.
