Lack Of Mack Backup Makes Reunion With Sean Spence An Attractive Option
I thought about this early this week, might be a good idea.
The Pittsburgh Steelers apparently went pretty close to all in for the potential to land free agent inside linebacker Dont’a Hightower following the loss of Lawrence Timmons in free agency. Hightower spent several hours at the team’s facility on Tuesday, but it was announced yesterday that he would return to the Patriots on a four-year deal worth just a shade under $11 million per season.

Not a bad option actually. I feel that we put a lot of time and effort into Spence and never really got the payoff. Offer him what he played for last season and see if there's interest?
Re: Lack Of Mack Backup Makes Reunion With Sean Spence An Attractive Option
I'd sign him for nothing more than depth.

A good depth signing that comes cheap

I didn't know he was a free agent again. How'd he do last year?
Hightower's visit was obviously just to pump up the price by making it look like there was serious competition. I don't like being used as pawns.

He played in 15 games last year, starting six of them, making 54 tackles with three sacks, three passes defensed, and a forced fumble, all of which, excepting the games played statistic, represent career-bests for him.
That's good for a backup ILB. Also he was good on Special Teams.

Linebackers lost left and right this offseason, I liked Spences' work ethic after an injury that would destroy most players career. It's gotta be concerning that this team has had s
uch trouble producing Linebackers with the number drafted each year, at least Shazier looks promising
Re: Lack Of Mack Backup Makes Reunion With Sean Spence An Attractive Option
Pretty simple. VW is the starter at 2 million per year. Can't pay Spence to be a backup and coverage specialist at 3 million.

I wonder if this means that they are pretty happy with Dirty Red and the progressions he made throughout last season. We'll see.

I get the feeling that the organization really likes the players in this year's draft at positions of need, and they also love having that compensatory third round pick. It gives them some flexibility to move if they want to.
