What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
First Devante Parker (likely 1st rounder) (Well dinner with Coach T, but still that shows great interest), then Sammie Coates (likely 2nd-3rd rounder), and now Breshad Perriman (likely 2nd rounder, maybe 1st)?
Im all for arming Big Ben to the teeth but this seems excessive. what could this mean?

no clue as IMO it is not even a plausible smokescreen ....
only things I can come up with is
1) they actually intend to draft one rather high ( dumb )
2) they are using them for info on corners they played against ( unlikely )
so in the end I got nothin
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
Trying to fuel a run on WR's so one of the pass rushers falls to us? :noidea:
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
IMO there's a lot of good corners available and a lot of good pass rushers available and a lot of teams that need them in front of the Steelers. If these teams go pass rushers and CBs, the Steelers may be in prime position to get one of these better WR talents, so I think they are doing their homework in that way. I'd rather see them take the #2 WR overall in the draft than reach for the 4th-5th CB just because they need a CB...

if we cant land a solid CB or OLB in the first round I would then look at O-Line as my 3rd option ( they cant all be gone for gods sakes )
figure we have Foster , Adams and Beachum are all in contract years ... so next year it will be a need if not headed off this year , so I contend if we can not get a top rated pass rusher or CB go fill the future need on the o-Line before it becomes a necessity
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
You'd think, but who knows anymore with this team. I like to think that they are preparing for all scenarios?

but even if that was going for us during the draft, what is a pretty good/great receiver going to be for us if we're going to end up with 4 of them? They can't all see the field a lot, especially not when we have one of the best RB's in the league and need to package offensive plays for him. Not to mention having a good receiving tight end in Heath Miller. Yes, I realize he's at the end of his rope, which brings me to my next point, then why dont we look for another complete tight end? Or a move tight end at the very least? Fills a position of need and gives us a weapon that will actually see the field a lot.
If we draft one of these guys, either wheaton or bryant ends up losing playing time, and what a waste of a 3rd/4th round pick that would be

Taking the better athlete and less of a chance is better than reaching for a position of need. There is no guarantee that Bryant or Wheaton are sure things at WR...although the arrows are pointing in the right directions...so if a top 2 guy is there at that position, it can't hurt to take him...and it wouldn't be the first time this organization wasted a 3rd/4th Round pick. I'm not saying it would be my goal going into the draft, but if it's the hand I'm dealt, I would be okay with taking a Top 2 WR.
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
Given the way the Steelers usually do things, who the hell knows what their plans are.
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
While I don't think a top WR prospect should be a priority, like many others, I think it is covering their bases. Anyone that can read a depth chart can see that the Steelers early round needs (DB and edge rusher) overlap with the priority needs of multiple teams drafting ahead of them. That could create a scenario where the top 4-5 edge rushers and top 4-5 DBs are gone. Is their an interior o-lineman worthy of the 22nd overall pick? I know there is a WR or three that could be.
Also, look at it from a future depth perspective. Taking a scenario where all the top edge rushers and DBs are gone, a WR becomes defensible as a pick. Wheaton is one good season away from a Sanders level contract offer. Long term I would rather pay Bryant than Wheaton. The Steelers WR corps is one injury away from DHB being a primary target. The Steelers have recently demonstrated an organizational philosophy of paying one WR at a time. That guy is Brown. Then they make sure the pipeline is always full of prospective top 2 WRs (Burress, Wallace, Sanders, Wheaton, Bryant, Washington, Brown, etc).
Again, I think it is a bad idea -- but I totally see a scenario where they do not.

Meeting with WR Jaelen Strong today...
So I guess we really want a new WR???
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
I'm miffed.
Maybe it's a smokescreen, in order to get a team at the end of R1 to trade up to 22 (for fear that the Steelers draft one of the WRs). Maybe... but, not likely.
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
The Steelers have no reason to draft a WR in the first 3-4 round
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
We are set at no. 1, no. 2, and no. 3 wide receivers. The only positions really in question are no. 4 WR and below. Last year's no. 4 wide receiver? Lance Moore who was used so little that he requested to be released. With all the productive offensive weapons they have, the no. 4 wide receiver position holds little value to this team and can be adequately filled by an undrafted free agent or someone currently on the practice squad. We don't really need to even draft a wide receiver and there is no way we should go after one before round 6

i find it hard to believe that we would burn like 5/30 of our visits to set a smoke screen. i really hope we dont end up passing on equally good/better prospects at positions of need to pick up one of these receivers. look at all the players taken after dri archer and landry jones ugh
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
I will be pissed if they draft a wide receiver in the first 4 rounds
Re: What's with all the early round WR's coming in for visits????
Maybe the paradigm has shifted in Steeltown. Offense first. Maybe they want to have the best offense in the league for the next 5 years with Ben at the helm.
Let the defense sort it out with twigs and scotch tape.
