Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Well, with RF, 1B and starting pitching being question marks going into the season, I don't see the Bucs making it back to the playoffs. I do think they will have another winning season, though. I'm thinking 86 wins.
Regardless, now that the stink of 20 straight losing seasons is gone, I can get back to simply enjoying baseball and the Bucs, regardless of what happens.

Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Baseball is back!!! Always look forward to opening day, even when the pirates sucked. It's funny to hear people back home talk, they are all fans again all of the sudden, lol

20 years between winning seasons and finally having a lot of talent in the organization, I can excuse them for getting back on the bandwagon.

I actually agree with you. I got pissed at first when everyone became a fan again last year, but after putting some thought into it, I really don't blame them for leaving the team hanging. 20 years is a long time to hang on.

I waited all winter to say "Raise it!"

Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
That was a typical Pirates game. Exceptional pitching, not much offense, but they found a way to get it done. Nice win on opening day.
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Walk off in the 10th, they gutted that one out. Raise it!!!
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
cant remember how i made it home, but what a great day.

Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Blue Jays are off to a stunning start. Lose 9-2 to the Rays. 161 to go.

Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Bucs pull out another nailbiter - 4-3 in 16 innings. Tony Sanchez with the walk-off hit, and Stolmy Pimentel gets his first ML win.
Say what you want about the lack of offense (and 2 games in, I've been reading/hearing plenty of complaints already), this team battles to the bitter end. That's really all you can ask of them.

Exactly! It's good to see them not give up and keep on fighting. The offense will come around

Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Sorry I'm late to the party, but the Pirates are off to go start record wise. Tough match up coming this weekend when St. Louis pays a visit. I'm excited to see Cole pitch tonight.
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Offense is coming alive tonight. Pedro 2-2 with 2 homers, ishikawa added a hr. And Martin just made the highlight reels with a spectacular throw to first after a bunt

Aaaaaaaaannnnnnd shit....
cole just gave up a 2 run hr
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Offense really coming together tonight. Cole had a good night. Waiting on Cutch to do something. 6-2 in the 7th, men on the corners with Cutch at the plate
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
12-2 final. The bats really came alive tonight.
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
16 hits, 12 runs.....sure hope this shuts people up about the offense

That's one game. 3 games they struggled to score. It remains to be seen what sort of hitting team they're going to be. You know Cutch will heat up soon enough. Most of the others, with the possible exception of Marte tend to run cold and hot. Pedro might well be the determining factor what sort of year this team has. If he can jump his average up to or above 270 while maintaining his power numbers then I think this team will remain in the playoff hunt all year.
Also encouraging is Wandy's first start. If you can get 180+ solid innings out of him and your other 3 top starters do what's expected of them then this team will avoid any long slumps. And the bullpen looks as if it is going to be strong again.
So my early assessment is this team will win 85-95 games and will make it into the playoffs again.

Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Bucs lose 6-1 to the Cards. Liriano gave up 4 ER in 6 innings, and was not sharp at all. His fastball command was not good, which unfortunately has been the knock on him throughout his career. He can get away with that against a woeful Cubs lineup, but the Cards will make you pay if you aren't on your game.
Rubber match this afternoon. Hopefully Volquez doesn't carry over his awful spring training, because it's going to be tough enough scoring runs against Wainwright and they can't afford to get down big early.

Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
This sucks, was looking forward to hopefully seeing him pitch in the big leagues by midseason.

Damn.....
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Volquez is looking good out there today, he's hitting every spot he pitches to. Only 55 pitches through 5 innings
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Melancon.....6 pitch, 1-2-3 inning, very nice. 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Bucs win 2-1, Grilli with the save. Volquez with a very strong outing - he showed why I wanted to be patient with him, because if anyone could get his head on straight, it's Ray Searage. If he can't fix you, then you either can't be fixed or don't want to be fixed (see Jonathan Sanchez).
4-2 homestand. Nice way to start the season.
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Series win over the Cards. Not a bad way to start off the season with the first 2 series.

While this isn't good, I'm not too worried about it because we have enough pitching depth throughout the minor league system to accommodate for his loss. He'll be back and I'm sure he'll be great when he does.
Charlie gets the start tonight. Let's see how this goes. Hopefully the Pirates can win this series too and improve to a 6-3 record.
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Well that works!! 4-0 Buccos........in the first
-
Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Bucs squeak out a 7-6 win. Morton was not sharp tonight at all, gave up 5 runs on 8 hits, but he did manage to go 6 innings. Melancon and Grilli both pitched easy 1-2-3 innings to preserve the win after the Bucs regained the lead in the 8th off 3 walks and a SF.
I've noticed that all of the Bucs seem to be very patient at the plate so far. They are taking a LOT of walks - 7 more tonight. Pedro actually has more walks than strikeouts. Hell, even Marte walked twice tonight. That is a very encouraging sign, because if they keep that up, eventually pitchers are going to make mistakes and they'll get good pitches to hit.
The biggest news of the night? Tony Watson finally gave up an ER. I guess he's human after all.

Re: 2014 Regular Season Thread
Looks like the Bucs are back to not being able to win in Milwaukee...
