Steelers Universe Interview with Rice University Safety Paul Porras
Steelers Universe Interview with Rice University Safety Paul Porras
I had the time to ask Paul a few questions as he prepares for his Pro Day and the 2014 NFL Draft. He was kind enough to share a little about himself.
SU: Paul, Tell us what your are doing to prepare for the upcoming draft. Where are you training and what is your routine.
PP: I'm training at CES Performance in Houston, Texas. Resistance training is one of the main focuses at CES. I train daily on combine specific drills and being more explosive.
SU: Tell us what attributes you possess that will an asset to whatever team drafts you.
PP: I'm a fast learner, a team player, a leader, I have a high football IQ, I'm optimistic, and I'm durable.
SU: Paul, who was the player that you idolized growing up and what player do you feel like can be compared to?
PP: Terrell Davis was my favorite player growing up. I like to pattern myself after versatile safeties, and John Lynch is one that I always admired.
SU: What is your greatest on-field memory or moment at Rice?
PP: Starting my first career college football game against UTEP my redshirt freshman year. I had 13 tackles and no one caught a pass on me.
SU: What is the off field accomplishment that you are most proud of?
PP: Being named to the Capital One Academic All District Team this past season.
SU: TD celebration...yes or no?
PP: Of course!
SU: Who is the current NFL Quarterback that you would love to sack or intercept?
PP: Cam Newton
SU: What is the best 40 you have ever ran?
PP: 4.56
SU: A couple of personal questions. What is something about Paul Porras that most people don't know?
PP: I'm an Eagle Scout
SU: If I took your IPOD, what would I find on it?
PP: Pretty much every genre of music. Rap, R&B, Dubstep, Country, Rock & Roll, Alternative.
Paul, on behalf of Steelers Universe, we want to thank you for your time and consideration. Good luck in your preparations, and we will be following your progress

Re: Steelers Universe Interview with Rice University Safety Paul Porras
Gaines having a big combine will certainly garner more looks at Rices pro day , that could spell big rewards for Porras
Re: Steelers Universe Interview with Rice University Safety Paul Porras
Great Job Perry, greatly appreciated!!

Gaines is probably a mid-third round pick. I would do back flips if we got a CB in the first and Gaines was still on the board at the end of the third!!!

I did not realize until today Gaines only gave up 13 catches all of 2013 , targeted 40 times 13 pass def and 4 picks ...pretty impressive numbers and very high praise from Paul

One of those players that could be a draft day riser and end up drafted in the 2nd.

dont really care for combine numbers much but a 4.59 40 and a 9'8'' broad jump is hardly "killing it"

I think you have to keep in mind what was expected for him to do.
I still think Porras will be a UDFA. I would be glad to see us sign the young man.

wasn't combine numbers was a workout with the Toronto Argonauts , proday results he had a 4.68 -40 so a 4.59 is killing it in comparison ( you have to remember this was part of a private conversation where both parties knew the prior numbers ) and the " killed it " was in reference to the body of work ... no passes completed on him in the 1 on 1's and he had 2 picks ...
oh and 4.59 is basically equal to what Calvin Pryor ran at the combine ( 4.58 ) and Porras had a better broad jump by several inches than Pryor ... so when Pryor is considered a first round Pick and Porras a Priority free agent , so large difference in value and risk yet get similar athletic ability ...
looking at it that way he certainly IMO killed it
Re: Steelers Universe Interview with Rice University Safety Paul Porras
Has a scheduled workout with the Denver Broncos
