Ron Jaworski: Joe Flacco has strongest arm in NFL

Joe Flacco is coming off his most inconsistent season if you care about stats like completion percentage, yards per attempt and passer rating.

Ron Jaworski is not a stats guy. The game film tells him that Flacco is a top-10 quarterback with the strongest arm in the league.

"That's Flacco's No. 1 attribute," said Jaworski, an ESPN analyst. "I get so tired of hearing how arm strength is overrated. It's far more important than people think. He has the strongest arm in the NFL."


"The element always overlooked by those who minimize arm strength is the willingness of quarterbacks like Flacco to pull the trigger. Few recognize that because there is no quantifiable means by which to evaluate throws that are not made by quarterbacks with lesser arm strength. It's all about dimensions. Flacco gives you the ability to attack all areas of the field at any point in the game."

Jaworski ranked the Baltimore Ravens signal-caller overall ahead of quarterbacks like Tony Romo, Matthew Stafford, Michael Vick, Cam Newton and Matt Ryan. We could debate that all day, but we're more interested in Jaws' opinion that Flacco has the game's strongest arm.

It's a bold statement and one that is backed up by a ton of research. That makes it tough to argue. Our top-five strongest arms would have to include Flacco. The rest of my list:

•Matthew Stafford
•Michael Vick
•Jay Cutler
•Cam Newton

If Nate Burleson is to be believed, Stafford's arm is only getting stronger, and he could pass Flacco in 2012.

Kordell could throw it a mile as well. Being able to actually hit the broad side of a barn, well, that was another story...

Wasn't Kyle Boller able to throw 60 yards while on one knee? How did that pan out for him?

The arm strength is important, but of course there has several other important thing to be a very good QB. But it is very important to have a good arm

Beat me to it. Kyle Boller had an incredibly strong arm. Go ask him how important that is..

What exactly is the definition of a strong arm anyway? Is it the ability to get the ball 70 yards down field or how fast and with what velocity you get it there?

In my opinion a lot of it has to do with the eye of the beholder because obviously there are different styles in the game.

That's a great question, Nadroj. I guess it's the same as talking about power vs. bat speed in baseball. Having power (or a powerful arm) is one thing, but I think it's much more important to have solid mechanics. It's not all about who's the biggest and strongest.

Flacco definitely has the best unibrow in the NFL, maybe even in all of American sports. ________________

Ask Ron where that "Strong Arm" of Flacco's got him and the Ravens.

Just because you have a strong arm, doesn't mean you can throw the ball accurately

Arm strength means nothing if you don't know how to use it.

Jamarcus Russell could throw the ball 65 yards downfield with an effortless flick of the wrist ... and complete it to the backup defensive end standing 15 feet out of bounds and wearing a parka.

I would rather have a quarterback whose best attributes were winning games and super bowls....

Ding ding ding. How many laser rocket arms are in the minors in baseball but cant even crack a bullpen spot because they have no control. Its all about power and touch, with touch winning most of the times. Chad Pennington had one of the weakest arms, but his accuracy and touch kept him playing in the league for a while.

Mike Vick throws the rock with ease...
