Kerry Collins insists that competitive fires still burn deep within him. But that doesn't fully explain why, at the age of 38, he'd be willing to come out of retirement and try to replace an NFL icon.

Neither does his relationship with Indianapolis coach Jim Caldwell, who tutored quarterbacks and coordinated the passing attack during Collins' first two years at Penn State.

No, what ultimately persuaded Collins to give football one more go was that $4 million deal he got for agreeing to work the next four months.............
