Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning will make nearly $20 million this season, and he's unlikely to take a snap from center anytime soon, primarily because his surgically repaired neck hasn't completely healed.

Colts management and coach Jim Caldwell were cautiously optimistic throughout the NFL lockout that Manning would be ready for his 14th season shortly after training camp began in mid-July.

With the Colts staggering to an 0-2 start, Manning's absence illuminates the risk of building a franchise around a high-price quarterback -- albeit one of the most prolific quarterbacks in league history.
