Arguably one play this preseason has demonstrated the progress Jonathan Dwyer has made since the Steelers drafted him last year. It likely helped seal his roster sport for another season.

With the game tied at 7 in the second quarter Thursday against Carolina, Dwyer hurdled a Panthers defender at the line of scrimmage, then smartly followed the blocks of receiver Wes Lyons and tight end John Gilmore and broke a tackle downfield before receiver Antonio Brown escorted him into the end zone.

The 50-yard touchdown was a patient run for Dwyer and counted for more than the six points it registered on the scoreboard.

you never know. One injury, and all of sudden he has playing time. Even if that isnt the case, Mendenhall was able to steal the 3rd down duties from Memo, and Redman has greatly improved not only as a runner, but as a blocker and receiver as well. So maybe the coaching staff at some point will be satisfied with Mendenhall and Redman's all-purpose abilities and give Dwyer a shot at more playing time, just to throw another thumper in there.

I think his play on ST will warrant him some extra snaps. Perhaps Memo is #4 on the depth charts now.

Ya, but if you take away his long run...

You can never have too many RBs.

I would rather have him playing than Moore, I understand Moore is a vet and good at blitz pickup but Mendenhall and Redman are just as good at that now with more of a threat out of the backfield and Dwyer is just younger stronger and fresher honestly I would have rather brought back Willie instead of Moore at least he would have a different dimension to add where Moore is completely replaced and offers nothing other than being a veteran.....too bad Batch blew out his acl woulda been nice watching what he could have done in pre season...

Moore is only good on 3rd and extremely long/obvious passing downs. I think his time at "#2" is over. Redman should be the clear #2 and take the load off of Mendy sometimes.

Dwyer is starting to look like the kid I watched in school. If Batch comes back next year and turns into the 3rd down back I was hoping he would, we have a nice corp of young RBs. Remember Redman in pretty young and I wouldn't call Mendy an old man.

Actually, the opposite is true. Moore has been most productive lately coming off the bench as a runner more so than a 3rd down back. Other than his blocking, he's been more of a liability out there than a help. Hence the reason Redman took over most of the 3rd down duties last season. Moore has been like that for a couple seasons now...but to his defense, he was better in 2010 than he was in 2009 where he was just horrendous.

I don't think we can throw Mendy to the dogs just yet. I still say he is the best at catching the ball out of the backfield of the backs we have.

that was Rashard Mendenhall that took over 3rd down duties except late in some games when we were blowing teams out. He's been kind of a liability in all aspects, blocking being the main point according to mike tomlin in one of his press conferences. he just keeps getting worse and worse every year. i hope we use him as little as we did last season.

Moore probably would not have made the team if Batch stayed healthy, especially with the pre season that Dwyer had.
