Steelers coach Mike Tomlin began Thursday's game against Carolina looking for a backup to Ben Roethlisberger. He might not have to look much longer. Charlie Batch, subbing for Roethlisberger in the final preseason game, needed only the first quarter to get a leg up on Dennis Dixon in a 33-17 victory over the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium.

The 14-year veteran was sharp and in command of a balanced offense that scored on its first possession. Batch played only two series, but it might have been enough to cement the No. 2 job.
Tomlin, though, must be concerned about Batch's durability, considering Byron Leftwich may not return from a broken left arm he sustained last week against Atlanta. So he took a long look at Dixon, playing him the final three quarters..............

What do we get from last night's game other than Charlie Batch still has a little juice left in the battery, and that Dwyer is worth keeping around for a little while longer?

Some of the young kids on defense, although raw, have a lot of talent.

Oh, Derek Anderson is definitely one of the 36 top 5 quarterbacks.

Sanders looks healthy, Curtis Brown can shake off a bad play and come right back and play good has a lot of potential and raw talent. Saunders is too good to let go in hopes of making practice squad, Dennis Dixon although I loved him in Oregon is not an NFL QB, both kickers can kick 20 yards further than Reed ever could even with 50 mph winds at his back
