New York Giants rookie safety Chad Jones was involved in a car accident on Friday morning in New Orleans, according to multiple reports from Louisiana.

According to New Orleans' CBS affiliate WWL-TV, Jones, 21, suffered "a fractured left leg and had arteries and nerves exposed." The station reports that Jones was listed in critical condition and was in surgery at 10:15 a.m. The accident has been reported to have occurred between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Jones' father, Alfred Jones, confirmed his son was hurt but was alert when paramedics took him to the emergency room, according to local radio station WWL-AM 870.

A Giants spokesman said the team has seen the reports and was in the process of gathering information on the accident and the extent of Jones' injuries.

LSU's head football coach Les Miles posted to his Twitter page, "Just got news about Chad Jones' car accident. We are praying for Chad and his family. Keep him in your prayers."

Jones recently signed a contract with the Giants, who selected the safety and former baseball star in the third round of this year's NFL draft.

Jones helped the Tigers win a national championship in football as a freshman in 2007 and a baseball national championship in the spring of his sophomore year in 2009. The 6-2 Jones, an outfielder and reliever who was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 13th round out of high school, became only one of two players in NCAA history to win a BCS football championship and a College World Series title, joining teammate Jared Mitchell, who also was on both national championship teams with him at LSU.

NEW ORLEANS ― Former LSU safety Chad Jones was in a serious car accident around 6:15 Friday morning in New Orleans on Carrollton Avenue near Toulouse Street.

Jones, 21, suffered a fractured left leg and had arteries and nerves exposed, officials told WWL-TV’s Juan Kincaid. He was listed in critical condition and was in surgery at 10:15 a.m.

The 6-foot-3, 231-pound New Orleans native, played in 40 games with the Tigers, starting 19 before forgoing his senior season.
Jones was drafted in the third round of April’s NFL Draft by the New York Giants and recently signed his rookie contract, a four-year deal worth a reported $2.616 million base salary over the life of the contract.
He attended St. Augustine in New Orleans until Katrina and finished high school at Southern Lab in Baton Rouge.

He earned national titles in football in 2007 and baseball in 2009. The Houston Astros picked him in the 13th-round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2007 and in the 50th-round of the 2010 MLB draft.
LSU Head Coach Les Miles tweeted a short time after learning about Jones' accident, saying, "Just got news about Chad Jones' car accident. We are praying for Chad and his family. Keep him in your prayers."
Jones finished his LSU career with 158 total tackles, including two sacks. He also had five interceptions.
He's best rememberd on the football field for his hit on Alabama's John Parker Wilson, causing a fumble that LSU recovered, ending the Crimson Tide's chances at an upset over the top-five ranked Tigers.
In 1.2 innings of relief in Game 3 of the College World Series in 2009, Jones didn't allow a run and struck out two as the Tigers went on to win the national championship.

A damn shame. And by the looks of that car, he must have hit that pole going really fast. His career is likely over before it starts, but at least he's still alive.

NEW ORLEANS ― Chad Jones lost control of his SUV and crashed into a streetcar pole, seriously injuring the former LSU football and baseball standout and injuring two others.

Jones, 21, suffered a fractured left leg and had arteries and nerves exposed, officials told WWL-TV’s Juan Kincaid, as he slammed into the pole on North Carrollton Avenue heading towards Canal Street.

The official also said doctors were attempting to get blood flowing back to Jones' foot. He was listed in critical condition and was in surgery at 10:15 a.m.

NOPD public information officer Shereese Harper said both passengers suffered minor injuries and weren’t taken to the hospital.

NEW ORLEANS -- New York Giants (http://www.nfl.com/teams/newyorkgiants/profile?team=NYG) safety Chad Jones (http://www.nfl.com/players/chadjones/profile?id=JON156964), underwent surgery for a broken left leg and ankle Friday following a mornign accident in which his sport-utility vehicle hit a pole.
Jones, 21, was admitted to the LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans in guarded condition. His agent, Rocky Arceneaux, disclosed the injuries to The Associated Press. He added that the 21-year-old player was alert when taken to the hospital and was still in surgery in the early afternoon.
An LSU baseball official later told WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, La., that Jones was out of surgery and doctors believed he would keep both legs.
It was not clear what caused Jones to lose control of his vehicle at about 6 a.m. on a six-lane thoroughfare with a streetcar line on the west side of the city, police spokeswoman Shereese Harper said.
Jones was extracted from the vehicle, but the two other men riding with him were fine, Harper said. She said it was too early in the investigation to know if Jones was speeding, and police will run toxicology reports to see if alcohol was a factor.
Jones, a safety, was drafted in the third round. He was part of the Tigers' 2007 national championship team and also was a left-handed relief pitcher for the 2009 LSU baseball team that won the 2009 College World Series. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers weeks after the Giants selected him in the NFL draft. He signed with the Giants last week.

I just read this and am so sorry to hear about Chad Jones. What a horrible thing to have happen to this young man in the infancy of his NFL career. What's most important is that though he is in guarded condition at this time and amputation of his leg is a possibility, he is alive. God Bless him and I will keep him and his family in my prayers.

Terrible news. Chad Jones is one of the nicest kids out there and he doesn't deserve to have something like this happen.

Giants rookie Chad Jones finally out of surgery

Jones was in surgery for what appears to be over eight hours, which only further confirms just how serious his injuries were.

Such talent. Sounds like he could have played both football and baseball if he so chose. He's lucky to be alive, let alone ever play professional sports. Two careers gone in the blink of an eye.
