No our leader has not been killed today - but we did witness our first political assassination of our Prime Minister ( equivalent to your president) from those within his own party.

After 2 & 1/2 years in the top job Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was shafted by his own party in fear of an impending potential loss at the upcoming election.

His deputy, Julia Gillard, declared he interest, a leadership spill was called. When the numbers were tallied our national leader fell on his sword and stepped aside handing the leadership of party and country to his deputy.

On a brighter note - today is a historic day by which Australia officially has it first female prime minister.

I am not a huge political enthusiast but today has made for some very interesting viewing.

A bloodless coup, eh?

Must be nice to be able to get rid of leaders who don't measure up without having to wait 4 years.

Wasn't he, at election time, like the most beloved and popular PM of all-time in Aussie-land?

Sounds a bit like someone we know in the states.

He most definitely was the most beloved and popular PM when elected.

His fall from grace can be pinpointed to:

1. A stimulus package designed to overcome the GFC that produced
a. A subsidised home insulation scheme that that was rorted resulting in shoddy workmanship ( for quick cash grabs) that resulted in a number of young workers and repairers being electrocuted and killed
b. a building education revolution package worth 8 billion dollars that resulted in buildings being constructed for up to ten times their actual price. Many people lined up and syphoned out money for personal gain.
c. Finally an announcement of a resources supertax. OUr mining industry, which has buffered the effects of the GFC for AUstralia, have been targeted for a 40% supertax on all profits from the mining sector. Many mining projects were suddenly cancelled and thousands of jobs were lost, small contracting businesses were hit, and isolated mining towns were hurt.

The labour party just could not find a way to back down from these issues so they sacrificed the man who was responsible for them. Even though his deputy stood by his side through every disaster ( she over saw the educational bungle) they saw that a party spill and political sacrifice was the only way to move forward into an impending election loss.

I awoke to hear of your Afghani war leader falling on his sword. Only to then hear a couple of hours later our leader do the same,

Aren't all the Aussie politicians liberal bleeding hearts?
