Friday Night Lights

The Steelers held their annual practice under the lights of Latrobe Memorial Stadium Friday night, and it's a pretty cool, if not at least interesting tradition. At the risk of sounding overdramatic, consider the juxtaposition: giant men, some of the finest athletes in the country and the world, who play the game of football at the highest possible level to millions of fans for millions of dollars, all on a tiny field in a small town.

And that town turns out. At least 5,000 people were on hand (Latrobe's population is 7,000), cheering the team on and clamoring for autographs.

This year, there was some added star power, with surprise visits from former head coach Bill Cowher, who was a guest of Hollywood uber-producer of the Dark Knight series, and minority owner of the Steelers, Thomas Tull.

I was listening to Sirius NFL radio last night and they were on location in Latrobe, both at camp in the day and at Friday Night lights in the evening. They were all very impressed by how sharp the steelers were, partiuarly this early into the proccess with the lockout and all. Those they cited as standouts were Big Ben, both from his fitness level, and his sharpness in drills, Antonio Brown, Lawrence Timmons, and Baron Batch.
