The training camp of the Pittsburgh Steelers is filled with early storylines (http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/29951/whats-next-for-steelers-plaxico). But one story that hasn't received much attention is the status of quarterback Dennis Dixon, who has been a no-show in camp.

A restricted free agent, Dixon has yet to sign his tender and hasn't reported to the Steelers. On Sunday the AFC North blog caught up with Dixon's agent, Jeff Sperbeck, who said his client would prefer a chance to compete elsewhere rather than be a backup for two-time Super Bowl champion Ben Roethlisberger this season.............

Dixon hasn't shown anything to prove that he's capable of being a starting QB in the NFL. He doesn't even seem capable of beating out Lefty for the backup spot for us.

I think Dixon is better than Vince Young. Too bad we will only get a 5th round pick for him, but might as well take something.

BTW, wasnt he supposed to be some kind of WR, KR, Slash type player here when drafted???

Dennis Dixon=Troy Smith

Having seen both, I'll take Dixon over Smith.

Compete somewhere else? What for? You won't win a starting job. The only reason he ended up starting those games last season was because Lefty got hurt.

He's not a starting caliber quarterback. Second string at best.

This is easily understandable. Not many players you want on your team that aspire to be the backup.

He believes he has just as much to offer to the starting position as some of the others guys around the league... and looking at some of those players, who could blame him.

Although, I think cracking the bakup role here first would be a better start, but then again, we'd get nothing next year. :noidea:

Well, that was fast (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/01/dennis-dixon-changes-mind-will-sign-steelers-tender/). Looks like he decided to sign.

Needs to develop quickly, or he will be gone next year. Batch should retire and Lefty may be a cap casualty.
