At his best, cornerback Keenan Lewis (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=12683) says he can be a "miniature-Ike Taylor (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4583)" for the Pittsburgh Steelers (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/pit/pittsburgh-steelers) this season.

If that is the case, Pittsburgh's cornerback position isn't as thin as people think.

Opposite fellow corner Bryant McFadden (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=8476), Lewis opened the first two days of Steelers training camp with the No. 1 defense. Lewis is gaining valuable experience this weekend, while holding the seat warm for Taylor, who signed a four-year contract but cannot practice until next week.

Still, this is a good opportunity for Lewis to prove his worth to the coaching staff and potentially earn a role as a nickel corner after two rocky seasons in Pittsburgh. Lewis is getting the first shot in what should be a deep competition with young teammates Crezdon Butler (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=13324) and rookies Curtis Brown (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=14033) and Cortez Allen (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=14109)..........

Hopefully he's learned from his mental mistakes last year and play like he should...he's shown flashes of being solid...but he let the mental part get to him. I think he will be the nickel back this year. Unless Brown or Butler just WOWs everyone.

We need one of these other corners to really step up. McFadden and Gay are okay, but the drop off between Ike Taylor and either of them is too large causing them to be targeted all game long. If any of these young guys can step up and make some real impact it would be huge. I can't stand watching Gay and McFadden give up 7-10 uncontested receptions each game.

Hey he was having a nice preseason till the giants game. Barely even saw the field after that, but his talent is there

He has the experience edge over Butler, even if it's a small one

I'm hopeful. One of them will be playing a lot either way if Gay isn't resigned, which at this point seems unlikely

This knucke-head should have already been a starter. If McFadden and Gay, with their sub-par play, have been higher on the roster than Lewis, that means his play has been WORSE than those 2 losers... I'm not optimistic in the least about Lewis.

Let's hope he learns not to run away from WRs on screen passes.

Would be huge if one of these young corner's could step up this season.

He'd better step it up this year because it could be his last chance.

Part of me thinks that a fresh change with a new secondary coach could do wonders for us. I can't just put the failings of the secondary last year solely on the players. Horton and co. have to take some of the blame as well.

Well said. I know we run Coach D's scheme, but within that framework the secondary coach has to make adjustments and make sure the personnel are effective. I was really excited when Lake was chosen as the DB coach. His understanding of the positions and the system should make an impact.

He was having a great camp last year and just blew it in the Denver game. I have high hopes for him.
