For the first time in a long time, the Steelers will have five quarterbacks in training camp, and that's because they have signed a 20th undrafted rookie -- Chris Dieker from Southern Illinois.

Obviously just another camp arm.

I'm sure he can hold a clipboard as well as anyone.

With Charlie Batch pretty much near retirement and with Dennis Dixon being a restricted free agent, who knows. Maybe he'll get a chance to stick around as the 3rd QB.

Bring back Kent Graham or Tee Martin

Agreed. He's got the size and arm. I'm guessing that Dixon gets re-signed though. Batch should retire.

Where did you read he has a good arm ? From what I read on him is that he is a tall, rather thinly built QB with a average to below average arm. And that he is good on the short to medium routes. And that he can run a little bit.

I hope Batch sticks around for one last year. Personally, he played well last year. Much better than Dixon which is as much of a testament to how bad Dixon is.

Surprised this guy first name isn't Mike. IIRC, our last two UDFA QBs had that name. Mike Potts and Mike Reily.

Good point. Rumor has it Batch once tore an ACL after tripping over a cooler of Gatorade due to not paying attention to where he was walking along the sideline while studying his clipboard too intently. :chuckle:

I really like Batch. He is a proven / seasoned veteran while Dixon really does not have much game experience the last 3 years.

That being said, while Dixon did not look poised last season his passer rating was still better than 1/4 of the starting nfl QB's last year....

That may be so, and I'm as big a stats junkie as they come, but just watching Dixon you can tell his struggles.

I'm pretty sure he also broke his collarbone while sleeping. I basically don't consider him an active part of the team anymore and haven't for about 3 years.

A number of places. I was just googling him and reading up. He's 6' 5" 230lbs. I wouldn't call that a thin build.

Southern Illinois quarterback Chris Dieker was lost in the shuffle at Hayden High School in Topeka, where a run-oriented offense wasted his talent. The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder is a classic drop-back passer with a big arm that's attracted NFL scouts. He spent part of the summer at the Manning Passing Academy, where he worked the camp as a counselor for 1,000 high school players and also learned from Peyton, Eli and Archie. Dieker was one of 25 college quarterbacks at the camp, one of three from FCS schools, probably because of his arm.

I'm sure that he's nothing more than a camp arm but it's cool to see a Steeler from my alma mater.
