I'm fine with this signing. He did well last year and I hope he can continue to do good again. There is one thing that separates him from Jeff Reed and that's being able to tackle. :chuckle:

im very unsure about this. Fell in love his 1st game kicking, (against the Bills, 4/4 on 40+ yarders). But he started showing his true colors again in the playoffs. That miss in the superbowl was one of the most epic misses i have ever seen in my life.

It was bad but considering the distance, it was probably a result of him putting too much power and losing all accuracy.

Suisham is "adequate". I know there's better out there... Wonder how our 70 yd kicker Waters is doing ?

He did well last year and, hopefully the same this year.

He is one of the least clutch kickers I've seen in my life....His 2009 season with the Redskins and Cowboys is a good example....He missed two field goals against the Vikings in the playoffs.

In 2010, he missed a field goal against the Ravens in playoffs and against the Packers in the Super Bowl.

I not want to lose a playoff game because of our kicker but I'm afraid it will happen.

Jeff Reed has not missed a field goal in the playoffs since 2004....Suisham missed 4 field goal in the playoffs in the last two years.

And that does not forget his missed field goal from 18 yards against the Saints in 2009 when he was with the Redskins.

That's all well and good, but Reed sucked ass last year, which is why he was let go to begin with. That shanked chip shot against the Patriots was particularly pathetic. And at least with Suisham, I don't wind up reading embarrassing stories about assaulting towel dispensers and pissing in public. And as others have mentioned, who is available and would be a better option?

When did 52 yarders become gimmies? ...anyway we lost by more than just that 3... and yes, there are better, but he'll do for now.

Both of his playoff kicks weren't gimmies.

The numbers show that he's at his best in December and in the 4th quarter. He's not Vinatieri but made some big kicks for us, the Buffalo game being a prime example.

I don't care as much what he did in the past with other teams. There are times, especially for a kicker, where a change of venue can turn things around which it appears to have done. All I know is that he did just fine for us last year, is our best option now, and I'm glad he's back.

Adequate until something better comes along. At least he can kick to the end zone.

Do we even try the 52 yarder with Reed?

At least he can kick to the end zone.

The rule change for kickoffs will help that too.

The rule change for kickoffs will help that too.

It will only add roughly another six touchbacks to his total.

I see nothing wrong with re-signing him. Let him and Swayze Waters battle it out in camp.

ok. interesting estimate, but how do you know we won't squib it even more?

ok. interesting estimate, but how do you know we won't squib it even more?

Here's a thread where I broke down the numbers.

Last year, Suisham had 3 touchbacks out of 34 kicks, not including the Super Bowl and any squib kicks whose purpose isn't distance. For example, I didn't include one game against Cleveland because we squibbed it away from Cribbs all day. This comes out to 8.8%.

Now let's factor in the rule changes.

Adding in kicks that would be obvious touchbacks, such as kicks that would now be 7 or 8 yards deep instead of 2 or 3, five of Suisham's kicks would have gone for touchbacks. That's 14.7%, a difference of 5.9%.

If we were to assume the borderline kicks all went for touchbacks, I had three at -4, the percentage would be up to 23.5% (8/34). An increase of 14.7%.

http://www.steelersuniverse.com/forums/showthread.php/7330-How-Kickoff-Rule-Change-will-Effect-Steelers?highlight=touchbacks

-------

Not sure how much more we're squib. I still think that'll mainly be done just whenever we're facing a dangerous return man like Cribbs.

I guess I'm sayin' there's too many variables to predict what will happen... I sure weather will figure into it as well.

And remember, it's not just a change for the kicker. Coverage will have that much less to run downfield. That will surely elevate the fair catches. Guys may be more likely not to come out of the endzone with less time to peek. :noidea:

I never said he lost us the game. He definitely didnt. But he sure as hell didnt help.

And its not the fact that he missed that the field goal, thats fine. Its HOW he missed. He missed BIG, that was an absolute atrocity of a kick, 10+ yards wide left. It was quite reminiscent of the "ol" Suisham with the cowboys and redskins.

Again, refresh my memory on his postseason field goal %. Because he sure didnt help his choking reputation last season.

We lost the Super Bowl because of 3 offensive Turnovers and 0 gotten by our Defense.

Not because of our Field Goal Kicker.

I'd rather the game come down to the Ball in our QBs hands at the end to drive for the winning TD over having to get a kicker to win it for us any day anyway. Something more Manly about getting it into the endzone over driving 20 yards and having a kicker win it for you...twice...yeah, I said it TOM EF YOU.

anyway...Sushi is servicable at this point, there are only like 10 kickers in the league at this point that are worth big money, and they seem to wear down much quicker these days than they used to. I'll take a guy that can hit me a 26 - 36 yarder for the times our Offense brainfarts inside the other teams 30 yard line and redzone. As for kickoffs, whatever...you have to tackle, I'll give you the ball on your 30, I don't give a crap, that's why we have 11 guys that play Defense. Those guys need to step up. whatever...just get me 26-36 yard FGs like money when you line up for them. Hit about 80% of the ones from 40-50 and give me about 50% of the long bomb ones too. I could live with that.

lining up to kick fgs just pisses me off most of the time cause it means our offense gacked it....

Let's see how much money he's getting too. You have teams giving kickers three million a year, have to think Suisham is getting less than that.

I have no confidence in him if the Steelers need a important field goal to win.

What were the distances of the misses?

And what about the clutch kicks in the regular season? Again, very clutch in the Buffalo game his first with the team.

We will have 2 kickers in camp, Sushi and Swayze Waters. Tomlin loves these Camp competitions. Should be fun to watch.

Don't anybody run out and buy a Suisham jersey yet. :heh:
