Sanders is worth a shot as a UDFA. Big, athletic guy but has off the field and injury issues. Almost wasn't eligible for the draft after his agent flubbed the paperwork.

TMC
07-25-2011, 08:52 PM
Saunders only off-the-field issues stem from him having illegal contact with an agent (he was with the UNC players on their vacation). Then, he tried to wiggle out of it and was not completely honest.

Other than that, he was a pretty decent guy at SC. He struggled lately with a broken bone in his foot, but once that heals, he will round into form. IMO, most Steeler fans will grow to like him. Big guy, soft hands.

One other point, the Steelers will be one of the last teams to confirm their signings. They do not confirm until they get signed contracts in hand. They listed a WR once from Georgia because he verbally committed, then the Falcons saw he was coming and offered him a little more and he jumped ship, so they are very tight with the information now.

My report and game analysis of Gray.

Anthony Gray/Southern Mississippi - 6'0 317
The Good
- Long arms
- Gets penetration in the run game
- Strong, tough to move
- Commands some double teams
- Good motor
- Good awareness, gets his hands up
- A little experience in zone blitzes, dropping into coverage
- Pretty good amount of starting experience
The Bad
- Very short
- Trouble shedding blocks consistently
- Inconsistent first step
- Useless when slow off the snap
- Minor injury concerns
Other
- 29 starts
- Three year starter
- Foot injury cost him seven games redshirt freshman year
Final Word
Underrated run stuffer who offers good value.
Games Watched
at La Tech, at Louisville (bowl)

-------------

Southern Mississippi vs La Tech (9/25)
- Prototypical size for NT.
- Commands double teams.
- Gets penetration, uses long arms to shed blocks.
- Not much of a pass rusher, as expected.
- Played both DT spots.

Southern Mississippi vs Louisville (12/21)
- Gets arms extended.
- Plays with good leverage and hand placement.
- Can get some penetration in the run game and is stout at the point of attack.
- Tough to move.
- Inconsistent in firing off the snap. When it's good, he's a force, but when it's bad, he can get blown off the ball.
- Difficulty in shedding blocks.
- Not much of a pass rusher.
- Shows decent hustle.
- Dropped back once or twice.
- Good awareness, will get his hands up.
- Played UT.

Pittsburgh (KDKA)- Kevin Colbert and his staff are off to a quick start with signing undrafted free agents.

The Steelers Depot, a reliable Steelers blog, is reporting that they’ve signed eight undrafted free agents, none of these confirmed by the team.

The biggest signing to this point is former Auburn TE Weslye Saunders. He is a huge target, especially in the red zone, at 6’5” and 270 pounds. Saunders has been clocked as fast as 4.72 in the 40-yard dash.
There was early talk that Saunders would get drafted in the 3rd round. Saunders was suspended from the team prior to the start of the year for rule violations. Saunders could mean the end to free agent Matt Spaeth.

Other Steeler Undrafted Free Agent Signings:
*DT Anthony Gray, Southern Mississppi
*C Colin Miller, Central Michigan
*RB John Clay, Wisconsin
*WR Adam Mims, Furman
*WR Terrence McCrae, Ohio University
*DT Miguel Chavis, Clemson
*WR Armand Robinson, Miami, Ohio

I don't like the Clay signing. It's not a big deal since it's just a UDFA, but he had a sloppy body at the Combine and looked terrible in the agility drills.

Two guys I have some info on from what I gathered before the draft.

134. Cincinnati Bengals - Trevis Turner/OT Abilene Christian: Turner is a sleeper in my book. A huge body, weighing in at 6'7 340, who can give competition to the right side of the line. It's been a rotation between the Dennis Roland, Anthony Collins, and Andre Smith. Unlike Smith, I don't see any issues with Turner's work ethic. He participated in three All-Star games during the draft process. This included being named the Lineman of the Game in the Cactus Bowl, Division 2's All-Star game. For what it's worth, last year's recipient of the award was J'Marcus Webb who went on to start at right tackle for the Bears.

----------

And then there's Eric Greenwood. Aren't you guys glad there's a Vandals fan on this board? That Enderle man-crush not looking so bad now, huh? :chuckle:

He's one of the big WRs we always seem to bring in. Micah Rucker and Matt Trannoon are past examples. Greenwood has plenty of size, 6'6, and played a lot of basketball in high school as you'd expect.

Biggest concern with him is a lack of separation because of his size. Doesn't get in and out of his breaks very well. But he's an asset in the red zone with pretty good hands who was fairly successful on a not so great Vandals' squad. Fun fact about him. His last catch was an OT game-winner over San Jose St.

You know the RB position is really a strange Animal. Yes there is alot to be concerned about when it comes to Clay's conditioning, and Athletic test times. But there is an old saying, " All he does is get yards, and move the pile " :-)
And with Clay, that's all he does. Yes Wisconsin had a great O-Line. But if you seen Clay play, he is a straight ahead, move the pile type of RB who is very very hard to bring down. As for his 4.83 forty time at Indy. Or his 4.73 time at Wisconsin, all I can say is in 2009, the same things were said about Tennessee RB Arian Foster. That he was too slow, and that he benefited from a great Tennessee O-Line, ect. And he went undrafted. Ah, how did that turn out for Foster, and the Texans ?

Quick take on the UDFA's:

Vaughn Charlton, TE/HB ..Former QB who gained 20 lbs his senior year to play TE
John Clay, HB 2009 Big 10 offensive player of the year. 1517 yards and 18 TD's... slow with bad hands during workouts.
Terrence McCrae, WR 6'3 WR, ran a 4.42 at pro day,had 35 inch vertical. 8 reps on the bench. Came from run-heavy offense
Armand Robinson, WR Slow reciever ..ran a 4.72 40...camp fodder.
Adam Mims, WR 5'8 reciever/punt returner. Ran a 4.40....will find a place on some team, somewhere.
Weslye Saunders, TE He will probably knock Spaeth of roster. Better blocker...better reciever.
Colin Miller, C 6'3 299lbs..may be a longshot, will battle Legursky for backup center...too light for OG
Trevis Turner, OT Monster 6'7 331 lbs RT prospect. comes from D-II...good PS prospect.
Brent Greenwood, S ...Not quite 6 foot tall and ran a 4.67 forty....fodder.
Niles Brinkley, CB Better ST'er than CB....that is his best chance to make the team.
Eric Clanton, OLB Good size but REAL slow (4.84 forty)...also only benched 12 reps...long shot
Mario Harvey, MLB 5'11 257 lbs...pretty strong and ran a 4.46 forty. Great production!...keep an eye on him.
Miguel Chavis, DE 6'4 285 lb unproductive DE...only 40 total college tackles and 1 sack.
Anthony Gray, DT 5'11 330 lbs...has a 31 inch vertical and 39 reps on the bench. (Oh yea!!!)
Eric Greenwood, WR 6'6 230 lb reciever...ran a 4.62 forty...fair production...could be a factor if he runs good routes.

Clay's a nice addition. Out of Dwyer Batch and Clay someone will survive. Perhaps two without Moore....

Sign Reggie Bush and throw these 4 on the scrap heap...lol.

Saunders is a 5 second 40 Yd dash player at best. He's never run a 4.72 forty. And, he was never a Ex-Auburn TE!! Maybe that reporter needs to do a little thing I like to call...RESEARCH!!!

Actually...Saunders has been timed in the 4.7's....his 4.93 time at his pro-day was just a few weeks after he found out he had a broken foot and had a pin inserted into it.

His on campus workout was way further then a few weeks after his injury, which was not football related at all. He hasn't played in 2 years. And when he did last play you obviously never saw him cause if you did you would have seen he was super slow off the line, and can't move vertically at all. He does have decent hands. And he does use his body well to shield defenders. But make no mistake, he and Max Starks would be a photo finish in a 40 Yd dash.

I like these sigings, especially Mario Harvey, that guy is a speeding bullet that would run through a brick wall, Im not sure hes pretty quick maybe they can bump him to a hybrid LB Safety position. OR for Special Teams.

It will be a nice battle in TC

If we read between the lines ( 1 average CB with Special teams ability only ) and try to project Free agent pick ups I can see possibly the #1 free agent signing being a corner back.

The list of UDFA's looks like it contains some serious Practice squad candidates at worst in

TE - Saunders
LB - Harvey
NT - Gray
RB - CLay
OT - Turner

I am very happy with this list of UDFA's. Glad to be back talking football

Maybe you should as well. He ran a 4.93 on March 30th, 2011. He had a surgery on his foot on April 1st, 2011 to repair that injury. He ran that 4.93 with a bad foot.

I think it is pretty safe to state that the injury was not football related since he was suspended his senior season. That is kind of a layup. As for seeing him, I am a Gamecock alumni and have seen almost every game he has ever played in. He is certainly not a 5 flat forty guy. Hell, he ran better than that with a broken foot. He is a solid blocker, has good hands, is a big target, and makes plays. After the last draft, he was in the running for being the top TE in the 2011 draft class. To act like he is garbage is foolish.

Basically these are just bodies to fill out the 90 man roster. Very few, if any, will have a long lasting impact on the team. I know there are sometimes jewels to be found, but more often than not, they are just pieces of coal.

Obviously you never saw him play....he was considered a 2-3 rounder before his suspension. His injury was non-football related...He tried to run on it at his pro-day on March 30....he announced he needed surgery on April 1st.

Pretty safe to say he ran on a bad foot.

How expensive do you think he'll be? Or are you thinking of picking up an UDFA who played on a run first team in college?

For those who were interested in Jeff King, reports are that he's going to sign with Arizona on Friday.

Unfortunately, he has under whelmed. They don't give out Mackey Awards for run blocking alone. I believe more was expected of his abilities... given the fact he was a 3rd rounder.

I'm glad to see we were prepped, and got offers inked pretty quickly.

When you see Saunders, you will understand. He looks like a small left tackle. He has exceptionally soft hands and the ability to slip away from guys. He is not a workout warrior, plays better than he times.

The Steelers have added a 19th undrafted rookie free agent, and his name is Aaron Bates. Bates (6-0, 198) is a punter from Michigan State, and he played in every one of the Spartans' 52 games during his career, all as the punter and holder. Bates left Michigan State ranked second in school history with 260 punts and seventh in punting average at 42.0.

As for Spaeth only being a Blocking TE...I don't buy it. He has never been anything more then a average Blocker. And, IF it is a Blocking TE we need, and say Saunders doesn't do well in camp, well considering how many TE's they have, maybe the Patriots cut their 5th round TE, Lee Smith ??? I hear he is a HUGE, Great blocking TE ?

I can't think of many instances of Spaeth being a poor run blocker. He's not elite but has a big frame with long arms. Suits what we're looking for.

Not hard to complete that pass when the guy is wide open because another Mich State player laid out two guys that were going back to cover the guy who caught the pass.... Still can't believe no flag was thrown...

Crumpler has got to be the most abused comparison for all tight ends. It's confusing. (Great receiving tight end for most of his career, mostly run-blocker near the end)
