It has been a busy offseason for Troy Polamalu.

He has been rehabilitating an Achilles' tendon injury in Los Angeles. He earned his bachelor's degree in history from USC. He'll have a maximum 99 rating in the "Madden NFL 12" video game when it's released next month.
But has the Pittsburgh Steelers' star safety also been planning a request for a contract extension once the NFL lockout is over?
"The Steelers always have done this sort of thing the year before a contract is up," Marvin Demoff, Polamalu's agent, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review when asked Thursday about the possibility. "There's been no discussion yet, but I'd say it's highly likely that was because of the lockout. We'd be open to it, sure. Troy's played there eight years and wants to finish his career in Pittsburgh."
Polamalu, who signed a four-year, $30 million extension in 2007, never fully recovered from the Achilles' tendon injury he suffered during a Week 14 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals when he approached the end zone to score a touchdown off an interception return. He missed subsequent games against the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers before returning for the regular-season finale against the Cleveland Browns.

The Chargers just made Weddle the highest paid safety in NFL history on a 5 year $40million deal ($19million guaranteed, $13million signing bonus). Ain't gonna be easy, even if Troy is willing to give that hometown discount.

I would like to think that the Steelers would do everything in their power to keep Troy around but I'm sure his history of injuries is playing in the back of their heads. The thing is that when he IS healthy, he's Superman.

Troy is one of the few players in the league (if not the only one) who I actually believe when he says that he'd be willing to take less money to stay with the Steelers than he could get elsewhere. He could've easily gotten more elsewhere when he signed his last contract as well, if memory serves.

I agree. I think he is very sincere about wanting to stay and will not want a massive contract either. He is just that kind of a guy.

His injuries are a bit of a concern, so maybe leverage that with a home town discount and lock him up until he retires.

BINGO. He is a Pittsburgh Steeler through and through and we would be honored as fans if he did finish his career here in da Burgh.

He'll leave the game a Steeler because one day, he's going to just walk off into the Sunset without saying a word. He'll turn, give a smile and a wave, and just walk off happy with what he was able to do with his God Given talents.
And some will wonder, "could he have played longer" and people will say "yes, he still had a couple good years in him" but he will be content.
which is why we love him.

I don't care about injuries, I don't care about Plaxico coming back, There are few things that I care about more than getting Troy signed. Pay the man!

True it is the highest ever for a safety based on the 40 million number. But truth be told, the final 2 years of that deal have base salaries of 9 million and 12 million dollars. No way does Weddle ever see those final two years. His 19 million guaranteed averages out to a signing bonus of under 4 million a year. The deal Troy signed in 2007 paid him guaranteed salary of over 16 million in 4 years, and higher base salaries in his first 3 years. So really the deal Troy signed 4 years ago is really higher then the one Weddle signed today.

He won't walk out into the sunset though. He will do a stage dive into the crowd and body surf!

Troy is one class act. But speaking of Jerseys. Here's a list of the top ten selling NFL jerseys last year. Most are quarterbacks, but look who is the #1 selling jersey.
Troy Polamalu, Steelers
Drew Brees, Saints
Tim Tebow, Broncos
Peyton Manning, Colts
Tom Brady, Patriots
Michael Vick, Eagles
Aaron Rodgers, Packers
Eli Manning, Giants
DeSean Jackson, Eagles
Mark Sanchez, Jets
