Cook: Harrison's remarks out of line
Friday, May 27, 2011
By Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall tweeted earlier this month that it's wrong to celebrate the death of another human being, even Osama bin Laden. That's OK. We live in America. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinions, even an NFL player.

Steelers linebacker James Harrison tweeted Wednesday that the people who make the rules in the NFL are "idiots" and said league officials are targeting the Steelers with their tougher player-safety rules. That's unacceptable. Forget freedom of speech in this case. Harrison, in essence, called his boss -- Steelers president Art Rooney II -- an "idiot" because Rooney voted for the rules changes. Beyond that, he violated the Mike Tomlin rule. "I'm not opposed to guys tweeting or facebooking or whatever they do," the coach has said. "Just don't tweet about my business."

I have no problem with Mendenhall's tweet.

I have a big problem with Harrison's.

For one thing, Harrison was wrong about the NFL targeting the Steelers. They weren't targeted last season when the St. Louis Rams led the league in penalties with 126 and the Steelers ranked 24th with 86, and the Oakland Raiders led in penalty yards with 1,161 and the Steelers were 25th with 716. The Steelers made it to the Super Bowl, which wouldn't have happened if the NFL had some sort of conspiracy against them. The Steelers also aren't being targeted now. The tougher rules are for the safety of all the players, including Harrison and his teammates. Sometimes, players need to be protected from themselves.

It also was incredibly arrogant on Harrison's part to suggest the new, more stringent rules are designed to take some of the toughness out of the Steelers' defense. He wasn't alone there. Teammate LaMarr Woodley tweeted, "lol im sorry that im not sorry we hit 2 hard." Like the Steelers are the only defense that hits hard? Try selling that opinion in Baltimore. Or New York. Or a lot of other NFL cities. Certainly, the Steelers' defense wasn't all that tough and intimidating against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV, was it? read more.... Mr. Cook, name a Rams defender that has been fined for $100,000 dollars last season. They didn't create the "Rams Rule" the other day.

Name a specific instance where an opposing player can smash Ben in the face each and every week with no penalty or fine, especially when there is a rule created saying you can't do anything like that period? Haloti Ngata? There was still no penalty and a chicken **** fine for blatantly reaching high and shattering Ben's nose.

This is just another case of Harrison overreacting....Harrison also did it at the Super Bowl when he used his media-day pulpit to mock Goodell.

He came across sounding awfully foolish that day....Not half as foolish as Der Kommissar made himself look during Super Bowl week with his ridiculous comments slamming Roethlisberger and simultaneously praising Vick. Goodell is a f*cking idiot and is generally quite deserving of the mockery he receives.

Goodell = Idiot/A-hole. Plain and simple. I also remember the division he tried to cause with the team when he said that several players stabbed Ben in the back when he (Goodell) went around interviewing players about Ben's character when contemplating Ben's suspension...all the players in question denied it... which resulted in Goodell being exposed as a liar... That A-hole would basically have to find the cure for cancer before he gets back in a many people's good graces... but we know that's not gonna happen.

How does Cook still have a job? I mean seriously? And he has a radio gig to boot. It must be nice to completely suck at your job and still be able to get ahead.

I agree. He's an idiot. Funny how he brings up Baltimore. Yea, according to their coach, his team "gets it" and that's why they don't get fined.

Cook is just a poor man's Skip Bayless or Bill Plaschke (sp?). Pretty predictable that he writes stuff like this to get attention. Like this article where he suggests that the Rooney's hired Tomlin for his minority status and the legacy of "The Rooney Rule" http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07023/756022-87.stm

Maybe shit for brains Goodell could hire Cook for his staff to enforce more stupid fines on our team. Someday needs to really get Goodell out of office what a POS.

I can't really call Harrison out of line at all. I've been saying the exact same thing for a year or more, only with more F-bombs.

How about this instead: Hey, Cook -- you can blow me. That's OK. We live in America and everyone's entitled to his opinion. That's mine.

yet they are guilty of illegal hits(according to NFL rules), but they don't get penalized or fined for it.

Ron Cook: Were others 'ruled' out by Rooney?

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It's one thing if Mike Tomlin got the Steelers' job because he's the best candidate. If he is, that's terrific. Welcome to Pittsburgh. Best of luck. End of story.

But what if Tomlin isn't necessarily the best choice? What if he got the job because Steelers owner Dan Rooney cares just a little more about his NFL legacy than about his franchise?

What if Tomlin got the job, at least in part, because of the Rooney Rule?
Would that be disturbing?
