Harrison, who was fined $100,000 last season for egregious hits, wasn't the only Pittsburgh player to react to the so-called "Steelers rule." LaMarr Woodley, another Steelers linebacker, wrote on his Twitter account: "lol im sorry that im not sorry we hit 2 hard."

Although the league announced team punishments will be financial, NFL vice president Adolpho Birch said he didn't rule out commissioner Roger Goodell applying further sanctions, such as stripping teams of draft picks.

During their meetings in Indianapolis this week, NFL owners also approved amendments to improve player safety. The league toughened rules against "launching" and further defined what qualifies as a defenseless player.

"I'm absolutely sure now after this last rule change that the people making the rules at the NFL are idiots."

"Thoughts on "the steelers rule"??? lol im sorry that im not sorry we hit 2 hard."

The NFL's new proposal to punish teams for their players' multiple flagrant hits that result in fines has been nicknamed by some in the league as the "Steelers rule." Not surprisingly, some of the hardest hitters on Pittsburgh's defense took to social media to blast the league's new initiative.

James I completely agree with you, but should he really be tweeting things like this when he is already obviously a goodell target?

Also, hits to the head of a passer that are not considered "forcible" blows will not be penalized.Riiiight. Defenders who so much as fart in the same goddamn area code as Brady or Manning have been and will continue to get tagged for 15 yards.

I really don't agree with the rule, but the NFL isn't being completely stubborn here.

They did make a rule change so that blows to the head of a QB won't automatically be personal fouls. It's now the ref's decision whether or not it was an intentional and malicious hit.

And remember, this doesn't mean the league will use this option every chance they get. I'm sure they'll only use it in the event of repeated offenses that are especially vicious. Just as the rule of suspending players....got a lot of talk when it was passed, but had no effect on the game.

It's just another tool on the NFL's belt.
