How do you rationalize in any way shutting down an oil clean-up operation that has been proven to work, and is working?

bho has played with his pud for 50 days while this has long since spun out of control, and when a governor does take responsibility to protest his state, the federalies step in and shut it down.

It's beyond unbelievable.

BP Oil Spill: Against Gov. Jindal's Wishes, Crude-Sucking Barges Stopped by Coast Guard

59 Days Into Oil Crisis, Gulf Coast Governors Say Feds Are Failing Them

Eight days ago, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal ordered barges to begin vacuuming crude oil out of his state's oil-soaked waters. Today, against the governor's wishes, those barges sat idle, even as more oil flowed toward the Louisiana shore.

"It's the most frustrating thing," the Republican governor said today in Buras, La. "Literally, yesterday morning we found out that they were halting all of these barges."

Sixteen barges sat stationary today, although they were sucking up thousands of gallons of BP's oil as recently as Tuesday. Workers in hazmat suits and gas masks pumped the oil out of the Louisiana waters and into steel tanks. It was a homegrown idea that seemed to be effective at collecting the thick gunk.

"These barges work. You've seen them work. You've seen them suck oil out of the water," said Jindal.

Coast Guard Orders Barges to Stop

So why stop now?

"The Coast Guard came and shut them down," Jindal said. "You got men on the barges in the oil, and they have been told by the Coast Guard, 'Cease and desist. Stop sucking up that oil.'"

A Coast Guard representative told ABC News today that it shares the same goal as the governor.

"We are all in this together. The enemy is the oil," said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Dan Lauer.

But the Coast Guard ordered the stoppage because of reasons that Jindal found frustrating. The Coast Guard needed to confirm that there were fire extinguishers and life vests on board, and then it had trouble contacting the people who built the barges.

Louisiana Governor Couldn't Overrule Coast Guard

The governor said he didn't have the authority to overrule the Coast Guard's decision, though he said he tried to reach the White House to raise his concerns.

"They promised us they were going to get it done as quickly as possible," he said. But "every time you talk to someone different at the Coast Guard, you get a different answer."

After Jindal strenuously made his case, the barges finally got the go-ahead today to return to the Gulf and get back to work, after more than 24 hours of sitting idle.

What a bunch of "red tape" garbage.

At least they're back at it... but you can't get those 24 hours back.

This would not surprise me.

Cluster Fuck...that's the expression. FUBAR also comes to mind...THIS is exactly why that single lone dude had a better shot at catching bin Laden then the military does. NOT because the soldiers aren't up to the task, but because they are being directed by an inefficient, overly politicized military brass that has CYA ahead of accomplishing actual goals.

Why do I have a feeling this thing is going to spew oil until that shit bag is out of office.

And this is where my disdain for this administration comes to light. Their handling of this crisis and all of the bureaucratic red tape that's hamstringing cleanup efforts has been abysmal.

From the get-go, they've said "no" to any proposal (most of them good) that Jindal has put on the table. They can't have the Republican looking good !

and yes, SteelerSal, this is total :censored: ......... of epic proportions.

Wow, I am extremely disappointed in the Coast Guard Command who thought it was a good idea to do this. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone relieved of their duties -or- a more rational version of the story surface.

Why do you think they had to "contact the people who built the barges"?

Checking for available fire extinguishers and life preservers seems like a normal enough check, and should only take a few minutes, but the other... I don't know. Maybe they wanted specs to see if a "barge" was a worthy sea-going vessel for the task. :noidea:

It just didn't seem like the best time to check those "stats".

Oil Spill: White House Intervenes After Coast Guard Stops Two More Oil-Sucking Barges

According to Plaquemines Parish officials, the White House found out about the boats being halted and spoke to the Coast Guard, informing them that from this point forward the Coast Guard can not interfere with cleanup operations, only make suggestions on safety concerns. Within a few hours, the barges were back in operation.

K, so, I'm not an expert, but why not send a pipe that's wider than the leak down right over the leak itself? wouldn't that contain at least some of it?

So you're saying that there hasn't been alot of red tape?

Not exactly. I'm saying the red tape has been a problem. A BIG problem.

Thought that was pretty clear...

Gotcha, I must have misunderstood how you wrote that sentence.
