For the past three days something related to the NFL draft has been on my television, mainly as background noise while I did other stuff around the house (cleaning, some other writing work, etc.) only to check in whenever the Steelers were on the clock. After the sixth round I finally became bored with the process and left, figuring the seventh round pick would either be somebody I hadn’t heard of or a player I knew nothing about. For the most part, that proved to be correct with Texas Tech running back Baron Batch — and I never imagined I’d instantly want to start pulling for him to make the team before he even plays a down of football.

Ryan already gave you the nuts and bolts to his story (http://www.steelerslounge.com/2011/04/steelers-grab-rb-baron-batch-7th/), as well as an awesome video where he talks about the path he’s had to travel to make it to this point, and it’s all pretty incredible. Analysts and NFL people always talk about “high character guys,” and it’s hard to imagine somebody being a higher character guy than this kid..................

He is definitely a special person . . . I tell my kids all the time that there are no "coincidences" and that everything is by design. Things happen for a reason, we may not understand it (or like it) - but everything is as it was meant to be and miracles happen everyday (you just have to recognize them).

What an awesome addition to our roster - I hope he sticks and stays.

Ripple 6.)

This is why I am even more in awe. I went back and found out what column he had read and this is the paragraph he saw.

“The easiest thing in the world to do is quit on something. Quitting takes zero effort. Quitting can even be justified with excuses and legitimate reasons at times. When someone quits at something they can even lie to themselves by saying that what they quit on wasn’t that important. To those people with that mentality this is what I have to say. If it was important enough to start, it is important enough to finish. Don’t quit. Hold on, cling to what is yours until your fingers cramp; and once your fingers cramp switch hands.”

Ripple effect........please put this kid in the same dorm room with Limas Sweed at St. Vincents.

I hope this kid comes in and shows he can play at the pro level and makes the team. You can never have enough quality character players. Looks like one Batch is on the way out and another on the way in.
