Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert has said 90 percent of a draft prospect's evaluation is based on what he "put on tape" while in college, a sentiment shared by many general managers and coaches.

The math, however, gets fuzzy during the more than three-month period that ended last week, when teams were allowed to hold final visits with out-of-town prospects. From January through mid-April, draft-eligible players are put through a dizzying array of paces, as they try to separate themselves from other prospects.

The importance placed on events such as the NFL Scouting Combine and colleges' pro day workouts raises the question of whether teams such as the Steelers stay true to their philosophy that only 10 percent of a prospect's evaluation is based on how he performs after he has played his final college game.

"We want to see a kid work out to verify what we thought we saw on tape as a player," Colbert said. "If you like him as a player, and he works out good, great. If you don't like him as a player, and he works out good, that doesn't mean he's a good player; it just means he hasn't totally utilized his full potential as a player. Can he? Will he?".........
