NFL draft process can result in 'paralysis by analysis'

More than eight million fans, would-be general managers and other presumed experts are expected to watch the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night, followed by swift judgment and definitive conclusions, even though no one really has a clue — not even those doing the drafting.

"We're all guessing at the end of the day," said former Washington and Houston general manager Charley Casserly.

Since the first draft in 1936, despite evolving from teams picking names out of magazines to today's exhaustive evaluation methods and high-tech analytical tools, it always has been a guessing game. For all the intense scrutiny and micro-attention to detail, mistakes can and will be made.
