All-conference running back Harvey Unga's football career at Brigham Young University is over, leaving the Cougars with a huge void in the backfield as they embark on one of the most difficult schedules in recent memory this fall while breaking in a new quarterback.

Unga, the leading rusher in school history with 3,455 career yards, withdrew from the school operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 16, saying that he had run afoul of the private school's strict honor code.

As first reported by The Salt Lake Tribune on Wednesday morning, BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said Unga will not be allowed back into school until January at the earliest.

Jenkins said BYU's dean of students, Vern Heperi, made the decision after considering Unga's request for readmission in time for the 2010 season.

Because college athletes have five years to play four and because Unga's NCAA eligibility clock started in 2006, his redshirt year, he cannot play for BYU in 2011 even if he enrolls next year. He cannot apply to the NCAA for a sixth year due to hardship reasons because he is not sitting out due to injury.

Jenkins also said Wednesday that Keilani Moeaki, a member of the BYU women's basketball team and Unga's girlfriend and one-time fiancee, will also not be readmitted into school until January at the earliest.

Moeaki also withdrew from BYU on April 16, citing an honor code violation.

Unga has not publicly commented on the situation or his future plans since his withdrawal on the day BYU's 2010 winter semester concluded. BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall issued a short statement Wednesday, saying, "Harvey has been a great teammate and valuable member of our program the past four seasons. I know returning to BYU to finish his degree is a high priority for him. We wish him the very best and offer our continued support."

Among other things, BYU's honor code forbids the use of alcohol and illicit drugs and students from having premarital sex.

Sources close to Unga say the 6-foot, 237-pound running back who would have been a senior this fall has explored the possibility of entering the NFL's supplemental draft in mid-July.
Jon Zimmer, of the NFL's Communications and Public Affairs department, said Monday no date for this year's supplemental draft has been determined. Nor has the deadline been set for players to apply for entry into the draft.

Last year's supplemental draft was held July 16. The mid-summer draft is for players who missed the deadline for April's NFL Draft or who have become ineligible since the deadline.

It is not a certainty that Unga would be taken in July's draft even if he does apply. Teams that select a player in the supplemental draft must forfeit a selection in the corresponding round of the following year's regular draft.

A few days after Unga withdrew, Mendenhall said in a Mountain West Conference coaches' teleconference that the former Timpview High star wanted to return to BYU.

"Harvey's first choice, and what he's fighting diligently for and trying to express to the administration at BYU, is that he wants to be back," the coach said. "This goes back to the decision he made to not declare for the [NFL] draft early and to stay at BYU. ... He loves our program and he wants to be here in the most desperate way. So that is his hope, that is his intent and that's what he'd like to do."

Without Unga, the Cougars will likely rely on juniors J.J. DiLuigi and Bryan Kariya to carry the load, along with promising freshman Joshua Quezada, who enrolled early so he could participate in spring ball.

Looks like we might have our first candidate for the supplemental draft.

What do you normally have to give up to make a pick in the supplemental draft? Isn't like a second or third rounder in the next season's draft?

The supplemental draft is similar to the nfl draft except it is usually held by phone hook up with all clubs. Each club takes a turn in each round ( 1 - 7)

If a team selects a player at the value they think is fair and reasonable ( just like the nfl draft) eg Round 5 pick 15, then they forfeit that pick in the NFL draft.

Brigham Young running back Harvey Unga (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/559296) and Truman State running back Vanness Emokpae have sent in their paperwork to be included in the NFL's annual supplemental draft on July 15, NFLDraftScout.com has learned.

Unga is more likely to be drafted, but Emokpae has the bulk and versatility to intrigue teams as an undrafted free agent.
BYU's career leader with 3,455 rushing yards, Unga was suspended from the team and elected to make himself eligible for the supplemental draft after considering transferring to another school.

http://images.cbssports.com/u/photos/football/nfl/img13529559.jpg Harvey Unga's productivity isn't questioned, but scouts wonder about his speed and durability. (Getty Images) The three-time Mountain West Conference honoree withdrew from classes at BYU in April after admitting that he'd violated the school's strict honor code. BYU's honor code calls for students to refrain from the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs, as well as engaging in premarital sex.

Following his withdrawal from classes, Unga re-applied to the university, but the school declined to allow him back in, notifying him in late May.
The 6-foot, 237-pounder is a powerful back with natural running skills. He has the lateral agility to sidestep tackles and locate holes in the defense. He has surprising game speed for his size and flashes soft hands. Some have characterized him as a poor man's Toby Gerhart, a second-round pick by Minnesota in April out of Stanford, and a potential fourth-round pick.
With many of the top big backs of the 2009 draft (Jonathan Dwyer, Anthony Dixon, Charles Scott) falling into the sixth round and later, Unga isn't guaranteed to be drafted. NFL teams are notoriously hesitant to give up draft picks for supplemental prospects. Though Unga has surprising running ability, his lack of breakaway speed is just one of scouts' concerns.
"He has some talent," said one longtime NFL scout who requested anonymity discussing draft prospects. "He is beat up physically, though."
Unga missed the 2006 season with a hip injury. He's been productive the past three seasons despite consistently battling with ankle and deep muscle bruises -- a natural by-product of his physical running style. He missed the 2009 season opener against Oklahoma with a broken hand.
Emokpae is a similarly-built athlete whose versatility and production at Truman State makes him an intriguing prospect.
Officially listed by the school at 6-1, 240 pounds, Emokpae has seen time at every skill position on offense, even seeing time as the team's Wildcat quarterback and kick returner in 2009 and as a punter in 2007. He was officially listed by the Bulldogs as a wide receiver in 2009, though he led the team in rushing attempts.
Emokpae enjoyed his best season in 2009, leading the team in rushing yards (524), rushing touchdowns (5), receptions (26), receiving yards (365) and receiving touchdowns (4).
He missed all but the first game in 2008 with a knee injury and, having already graduated, simply is choosing to make himself eligible for the NFL rather than return to Truman State for his fifth season.
Both players boast a combination of athleticism and size to pique the interest of scouts. To find a niche in the NFL, however, each may have to make the difficult transition to fullback or H-back.
Designed to be an avenue into the NFL for "special case" players, the supplemental draft has grown in popularity in recent years.
The Washington Redskins selected former Kentucky star defensive end Jeremy Jarmon in the third round last year. Jarmon played in 11 games for the Redskins, starting once. He finished his rookie season with eight tackles, including six solo stops. His forced fumble against Tampa Bay running back Clifton Smith with only 48 seconds left gave the Redskins their second victory of the season.
The supplemental draft was canceled in 2008 due to a lack of player eligibility, but 10 players applied for special eligibility in 2007. Of them, two were selected. San Diego drafted former Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver in the fourth round, and Baltimore selected Maryland offensive tackle Jared Gaither a round later.
Since its inception in 1977, a total of 39 players have been selected via the supplemental draft. Among the most notable selections were quarterback Bernie Kosar (Cleveland, 1985), wide receiver Cris Carter (Philadelphia, 1987) and linebacker Brian Bosworth (Seattle, 1987).
The supplemental draft was originally created for players who had lost their eligibility to play collegiate football between the regular April draft and the beginning of the next season. Many "special case" players had lost their eligibility due to academics or legal troubles.
Unlike the televised April draft, the supplemental is carried out via e-mail among teams. The teams, slotted into three groups based on their won/loss percentage the year previous, contact the league with a list of the players they'd draft and the round in which they'd take them. Any team that uses a supplemental draft pick would then lose the corresponding selection in the NFL Draft the following April.

Quick update on the situation. This was actually one of the top results when I googled Unga and the Steelers.

Not entirely sure where their source is, but Rotoworld is saying that the Steelers are "giving him a look". Take that for whatever it's worth.

I think the only time we've ever been apart of the Supplemental draft was in 1989.

If we do draft him, you think that means we missed on Summers.

That would be a big YES brother.

We only draft him if we think he is a legitimate chance at being the #4 RB / #1 FB

Mendenhall / Moore / Dwyer / Redman - Summers - Vincent etc etc. With that scenario I could only see him being an option if he was available in the 7th round of the supplemental draft.

I agree with those thought completely, and I can see him probably going in the 5th.
We may be looking, but I think I would be a little surprised if we bite on him.

There will be another RB, a DT from Illinois, and Jeramiah Massoli (sp?) is expected to enter the draft as well.

Good pick up Chidi

The NFL supplemental draft will take place on July 15 and three players have already applied for entrance.
BYU RB Harvey Unga (6-foot 3/4, 245 pounds) hopes to get in and will have his pro day on July 8.
Northwestern State running back Quentin Castille (6-1 3/8, 250), a transfer from Nebraska, also has petitioned for the supplemental draft, and ran a 4.8 at his pro day earlier this year.
Vaness Emokpae, from Truman State, a WR/TE/FB also hopes to make himself eligible.
Two more players — Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli and Illinois DT Joshua Price-Brent have not yet formally filed, but are expected to do so soon.

2010 Supplemental Draft set for July 15
by Mocking Dan on

The premier player in this year's supplemental draft, set for next Thursday, is BYU running back Harvey Unga. He is working out today for several teams. Among those with reportedly the most interest are the Rams, Dolphins, Chiefs and Steelers.

Unga is the BYU career rushing leader with 3,455 yards and considered entering the 2010 NFL Draft. He has a good blend of size (6-foot 3/4, 245 pounds) and agility. By no means is her a speed burner, but he has good lateral agility and can make people miss.

He's also shown to be a good enough pass receiver. Unga has a tendency to run with too much urgency and can get upright between the tackles. He also has some injury issues. He sat out the 2006 season with a hip injury and a broken hand sidelined him a game in 2009. He's also has minor ankle issues throughout his career.

The other player most likely to be drafted is former Illinois defensive tackle Josh Price-Brent. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 315 pounds, he's a slow-footed plugger in the middle. He started 12 games for Illinois in 2009, totaling 29 tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks and three forced fumbles.

He was ruled academically ineligible for the season. He's also had some run-ins with the law, including a DUI and a suspended license.

Also officially in the draft are running backs Quentin Castille (Northwestern State) and Vaness Emokpae (Truman State).

Castille is a transfer from Nebraska who played a season for Northwestern State. In two years for Nebraska, he ran for 810 yards and 10 touchdowns. In the Gator Bowl against Clemson in 2008, Castille ran for 125 yards. He was to challenge Roy Helu for the starting job at Nebraska before violating team rules.

Emokpae led Truman in rushing and receiving last season. He played a variety of positions in college. At 5-foot-11 and 245, he projects as a fullback or H-back in the NFL.

Jeremiah Masoli is looking at transferring to Louisiana Tech and will not enter the draft.

Masoli found a loophole in the system to get himself an extra year in college.
