In this era of NFL running backs sharing workloads, Pittsburgh’s use of Rashard Mendenhall last season was a bit of an anomaly.

His 324 carries was fourth in the NFL; no one else on the Steelers had more than 53 carries.

Simple. With the offseason, the lockout, and the very real possibility of not having a 2011 season at all, this is another case (among many) of Bullchitte trying to manufacture "news" where there isn't any. Next. :coffee:

I don't pay a lot of attention to most sports writers. Their job is to get people to read their stuff, and as we have seen in the past, will often write anything to accomplish that.

I don't think he's hating. He has a good point. Once your RB's have 320+ carries it's overload. In today's NFL you have to split the carries.

BTW, his name is DOUCHEtte

Well in this case he's making a good point, and Tomlin did say he'd run the wheels off FWP, and proceeded to do so. Hey it's Tomlin's team, and who's to say that getting all you can as quick as you can out of a running back isn't the best approach? But that said he's hard on his backs.

Always thought Bouchette was a little quirky. Maybe his viagra got held up in the mail. Who knows.

In all honesty we need to split the carries between Mendenhall and Redman or someone else.

Agreed. I was addressing his stupid remarks in respect to Belichick not appearing at the coach's breakfast and Tomlin's "endorsement" of the no show - particularly this one:

In other words, Tomlin doesn’t care what Belichick does (unless, of course, it’s cheating the Steelers).Absolute claptrap. Wish I got paid to write complete bunk.

Remember that Mendenhall is better equipped to be the workhorse than Parker. Parker was a small back who relied on speed. Mendenhall has a much bigger upper body and better leg drive. He can handle the workload better than Parker every could.

And Tomlin has talked about the reasons why Mendenhall got so much work. When Ben was out, Mendenhall was the key cog of the offense. We had to use him as much as possible because he was by far our best weapon. Don't forget how bad Dennis Dixon looked and as much of a stabilizing force Batch was, if it comes down to centering my offense around Batch or Mendenhall, I'm taking Mendy.

Redman still has growing to do as well. I'm sure of it. Last year was only his second year out of college, from very tiny Bowie St. That's a big jump.

Hey - some of you wanted our offense to be 70-80% run, so what are ya bitching about? The way I've always seen it is if you have a very capable and unique player on your team, utilize his talents as often as possible.

I'm with Ed here - I don't really pay much attention to what these jockmouths drivel about in the offseason. Controversy sells.

Man, are we now crying that the media is getting tough on Tomlin??? I dont think anybody has it out for Tomlin.

Bouchette brings up a good point about not having a capable #2 RB on the team the same way there was none with Parker. He also brings up a good point that thinking of not showing up for an NFL scheduled event with the media is wrong. The media conveys the game to the fans and the fans pay the bills...ist part of the job that pays coaches a few million dollars a year.

Spoiled Steeler fans cry that their OC makes bad calls, their DC gives up leads in the end of games but that the media has it out for their Head Coach. Can somebody find me the sched that tells me if we are hating coaches or defending them this week??

I really do see how stating the we don't have a lot of faith in what most sports writers put on paper is crying. It's just a fact.

It's fairly common knowledge that Belichick is a boorish jackass - that's not news. However, Tomlin didn't "endorse" what he did, either, doesn't look like. And unlike Belichick, he actually SHOWED UP. So how's Tomlin the "bad guy" here? Sensationalistic garbage and par for the course from Bouchette.

I dont see how a sportwriter comparing Mendenhall to Parker in not having a backup to share carries is "Hating on Tomlin"

I dont see how a sportswriter saying Belichek not showing up to a NFL arranged media event is classless and the fact that Tomlin said he thought of doing the same as Belichek as "Hating on Tomlin"

Both cases just look like a sportswriter stating facts and a reasonable opinion. I for one agree that Mendenhall needs a complimentary back and also agree that bailing on an NFL arranged event is classless for one of the 32 men with the privilege of being a head coach. I was also one of the guys that endorsed Tomlin from Day 1 and still back him. IMO, its not hating, but a reasonable question.

I agree that Bouchette's headline is a grasp at some headlines. He is connecting the dots on Tomlin saying he thought of not showing up, but the fact is that he did show up. The story about running the wheels of Parker and mendenhall is to the point IMO.

I personally hate the bloggers that sit in their moms basement and question legitimate sports writers. I honestly think in 5 years there will be few mainstream media members and anybody with a PC or tablet will be dominating and misinforming the sports media. I'd rather read the PG than Bleacher report, but something tells me the online crap will take over soon.

Where did he say that?

A reporter from Boston, the excellent Mike Reiss (of ESPNBoston.com and formerly of the Globe) stopped by a few coaches’ tables and asked them if Belichick’s no-show bothered them – flaunting the rules again?

Mike also asked Mike.

“I’m just going to try to conduct my business in a manner that I see fit and appropriate,’’ was Tomlin’s answer. “I don’t compare myself to any of these men. The battle I fight is the man vs. himself battle. That’s the way I approach my job.

“I’m sure he’s not losing any sleep over the fact it’s bothering you,’’ Tomlin told Reiss.Looks more to me that he didn't give Mike Reiss the answer Bouchette wanted him to give - namely, he refrained from snarking at Belichick. I'm sure if he had, good ol' Ed would've had a field day with it.

Looks like Tomlin did tell Bouchette that he thought of not showing up like Belichek. Hence the "field day" you predicted. looks like more of a sandbox day.

I always laughed at Steeler fans who blamed Tomlin for supposedly ruining Parker in 2007, especially considering that Cowher ran Parker more the year before and no one said a damn thing.

Mendenhall only ran 242 times last year(2009) and Steeler fans were saying better have more touches this year(2010).Then he does and several people start whining because 325 carries is supposedly too much.:coffee:

Well, that was also before a certain somebody became OC. We know whose fault it really was for running Parker too damn much, even though he also calls way too damn many passing plays.

I wouldn't say they ran mendenhall too much. But when mendenhall has 27 carries in the afc championship, for example, and redman only has 4 you know there's a problem. Imo, redman has proven he can pound the ball so give it to him and then let our rested workhorse finish them off

Recent stats would indicate the 350-370 some where is the breaking point and I'm sure Tomlin knows this too. 325 sounds good to me.

Parker didn't finish the season so he had less carries in 2007, than in 2006. Sure, increase the workload for Mendy. And then see what happens a year or two after. It's a different game now. You can't have a workhorse back in today's NFL, even with Goodhell's sissy rules.

There is comparison of number of runs only. Nothing about the difference body type or running styles, or that some backs like Mendenhall work better as the number of runs increase. I have hear Emmitt Smith state that he always ran better the more he carried the ball. In fact the only time Parker was mentioned again was when the writer implied that Parker would not agree with Tomlin's decision. Hate? I don't know. Slanted writing? IMO definitely

Belichek was not there, and Tomlin apparently refuse to badmouth him because of it, that is what we know. We don't know the manner in which he made the last statement. Personally I could see my self jokingly saying the same thing, but it is again at least implied that he was serious, the opinion of the writer.

No, I still do not buy or agree with every thing that a writer puts on paper. I have lost most of my respect for most sports writers a long time ago.

Yo E...I get where you are coming from. Writers can conjure up a lot of crap, like Ron Cook, Skip Bayless, etc. I still love to read a good scribe more than a self proclaimed expert blogger though and that is why I still buy into the mainstream media.

I just dont like the fact that because somebody questions Tomlin, another coach or any Steelers player that the homers who bleed B&G and have a blog feel like they need to lash out at the media. Objectivity is tough for true fans (Fan-atics), I get it...but I still think that blind faith can lead most to sharing Kool-aid in the jungle, while questioning can get some perspective on things.

I think its perfectly OK to question Tomlin, LeBeau, Arians, Rooney, Ben and anybody else on the Steelers. Some fans dont think so and need to react on blogs.
