The NFL owners meetings have a different feel to them this year, not surprisingly, because of the league’s first work stoppage since 1987.

League business, most notably free agency, has been suspended since the owners locked out the players after negotiations on a new Collective Bargaining Agreement broke down.

The NFL has barred team employees from commenting on the lockout -- and pretty much anything related to it.

That precluded Kevin Colbert from talking about when he thinks the lockout will end or the effect it will have on the Steelers’ offseason.

The Steelers’ director of operations did answer questions Sunday on a number of subjects, including the proposal by the NFL’s competition committee to increase protection for defenseless players as well as the draft.

The draft is the one thing that will go on even if the lockout extends though late April, and Colbert has been busy preparing for it.

What follows are excerpts from his chat with Pittsburgh reporters from the owners meetings.
