To the left you’ll see what Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans saw on December 5th, 2010. Namely, stud tight end Heath Miller getting plowed over by Baltimore Raven linebacker JaMeel McClain.

McClain’s hit was grossly in violation of rules implemented by the NFL this past season, but did not draw a flag, despite multiple officials stating prior to the game being over that it violated the new helmet to helmet rules.

The day following the mugging suffered by Miller, McClain was fined $40,000, roughly 8% of his yearly salary.

When interviewed by the Baltimore Sun about the hit in December, McClain had this to say:
“Basically what it is, it’s a man going to try to make a play, I was within the strike zone. I was going the way that I was taught to proceed in the game throughout my whole life. And if I let off on that play and he catches the ball and possibly streaks down the field for 50 yards, it’s a different story we’re talking about.”

Let’s stop right there at ‘strike zone’ and watch the video:...............

The fines to start with a ludicrous. I applaud any player that gets a fine reduced. They fine too much money to start with to play a contact sport.

Next year GODell is going to pass out 2 for 1 coupons. You get fined for a dirts shot on a Steelers player, you get the next shot free. After 5 illegal shots and you get a Gold Club coupon entitling you to an autograph picture of Roger Goodells family, and a free coffee from Starbucks.

I agree - many of the fines levied this past season were over-reactionary BS.

Still the standard had been set, and as much as the NFL likes to change it's views of some rules in the middle of the year they should wait for the new season to implement them.

I think if they're gonna do it then it should be the same across the board. They seem to want to make an example of the Steelers, more specifically, Harrison, but they're not levying against other players who deliver equal or worse hits, and that to me is the travesty!

Multiple fines have been reduced. McClain's, Eric Smith (yes, his hit was on a Steeler), and Cortland Finnegan's fines have all been chopped in half in the past few days.

Not sure why you quoted me. I was stating that all fines against Steeler players seem unreasonably high, whereas those against any other player on any other team are not, and or get reduced. I think all fines should be the same no matter what team they play for.

I was quoting you because I thought you were referring to having the fines dropped across the board if they are appealed. My fault.

What I can't agree with is your second sentence. First, it implies the league is "head-hunting" which is not the case. It would not create such a stable appeals committee if the league was out to "get" any team or player.

Plus, you can't have fines across the board? Should an inadvertent, though illegal, hit to the helmet on a defenseless receiver be punished the same amount as say, an all-out brawl between two players? Or god forbid, some extreme violent intent on another player (i.e. a bounty is put out on an opposing player). Should a first-time offender be given the same fine as a repeat offender? Probably not.

This is something that can't be colored in black and white. There's varying shades of grey.

When I say across the board, I mean all incidental contact is x amount... fighting is x amount, blatant headhunting is x amount. That's the way I meant it. But you're right, there's always the gray. And it does seem like they were making an example out of Harrison, while when certain Steelers got hit, no penalty and maybe a light fine upon further outcry and review.

Again, even when you break it down into categories, there are plenty of subsets of each category that make it difficult to pinpoint exactly. I'm all for the league being more specific and clear on what is considered a fineable offense but in terms of the monetary amount, it's more difficult to say.

There were plenty of other players who got hit with hefty fines.
