Just heard on sports radio that Carnell Lake is going to interview for the vacant DB Coach position. Anyone else heard this? I think he would be a great fit, considering he's familiar with our system, and has played both safety and corner when he was with the Steelers. Let's see what happens.

Always loved Carnell...he was a great player that performed well at whatever position he was asked to play...
I believe he went to the pro bowl as both a corner and safety, if I'm not mistaken.

Report: Steelers talk to Lake about secondary coach vacancy
NFL.com news
March 2, 2011

The Steelers interviewed Carnell Lake, once a five-time Pro Bowl safety for the team, for their vacant secondary coach job Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

The position has been open since Ray Horton left to become the Arizona Cardinals' defensive coordinator.

Lake had 25 sacks, 17 fumble recoveries and 16 interceptions during 10 seasons in Pittsburgh (1989-98). He also spent one season each with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens.

I'd love to have Mr. Lake in our coaching staff

Had a lot of success with Perry. I'm sure that is going give credibilty to hiring an ex-player to an assistant role. And of course, former players and coaches like Dick Hoak also give that idea credibility.

Lake was my favorite Steeler from that era!!! He started out his career as an LB, and as Sal stated played great as both a Corner and a Safety kinda fits the Steeler slash mode. IMHO he was better than Rod, I'm sure more than a few of yinz are gonna call blasphemy on that, but it is what it is. Wouldn't it be classic to see him and Rod going head to head against each other as coaches. Bring it on!!!

Never mind coaching, can he still play?

It would be nice to have Lake back in the fold, hopefully bringing along our rookie CBs to play at a Pro Bowl level. Yeah, it is nice to dream.

Carnell was my favorite Steeler from back then too. I think he'd make a phemoneal DB coach. Once a Steeler, always a Steeler I say! :tt03:

Not only does he know the Steelers's system- but he knows Dick Lebeau's concepts.

Sure, Lebeau didn't have the fireblitz nailed down at that time like he does now. However, I think this could be nothing but positive. I just hope he knows how to coach what he did, instead of just showing what he did. That's my only problem with players turn coach.

I'd like to see this happen. Carnell was a great player for the Steelers. Hopefully his playing smarts can translate into being a good coach.

Well, one interesting thing about being a Steelers fan-

We change 3rd level coaches about as often as other teams change head coaches-and we get as excited about our third level coaches-as they do about their head coaches.

Regardless of anything else-it is great to be a Steelers fan.

Lets hope to see some improvement. Does he have any coaching experience? I know he was a good player but that does not always translate into good coaching.

Keep it in the family. 4 time pro-bowler. The Raiders get Woodson, we get Lake... Hope he can persuade the Rooney's to upgrage CB's....Brings back memories...

I am delighted to hear this. I wonder if this will move Rahim Moore a little higher on our draft board.

The word is that Rahim Moore is in free fall amongst GM's. Some have him as a 3rd round FS. With some inside knowledge and a tick of approval from Carnell he may well be a logical choice at the end of round 2.

From a nostalgic point of view I like the pick. From a realistic perspective I am a little worried about a guy with one year of coaching experience. I think it is a fair call to say that this selection is a bit of a gamble. Carnell has 4-5 years experience as a player under Dick Le Beau, but that was a good 15 years ago.

Lets hope he is a good motivator and fire starter, because he needs to light a fire under a couple of DB's currently on the roster.

He did pretty well the year he was at UCLA with a D-backfield that didn't have much experience. Lake was an intelligent player that looked to me to understand the game better than most safeties. Plus the Steelers have a pretty good track record of finding good coaches. I think he will do fine.
