First glimpse at who the steelers might be interviewing.

Southern Cal OT Tyron Smith admitted that he did play at 285-pounds this past year. He said he met with the Steelers, Browns and Saints and is anticipating repping 225 pounds 35 times this week.

The Steelers also met with Florida OC Mike Pouncey (http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/scouting_department.html)

I know that they are allowed 60 interviews this week so it is early days.

(but two O-linemen will keep many punters happy)

I like Mayock as well. I don't always agree with him, but I think he does a good job and makes that NFL Network combine team.

TE Lee Smith is still very interesting me. His straight line speed isnt great but I thought he looked a lot "quicker" than most of the TE's. I still like him as a possible day three draft pick.

I'm not leaving the Lee Smith camp. I saw nothing to tell me he is not what I thought he was.

I did think Thomas has a pretty good day.

I like my O line drills and gotta say the top guys are impressive. Costanzo, Solder, Carimi, Hudson, Pouncey, Watkins.

Some other notibles I thought were:
-How well Marcus Cannon from TCU moves for such a big man 358lbs.
-Joe Barksdale is a good athlete for a big man who under performed this year. Think he is an intriguing prospect at RT and maybe LT
-Ray Dominguez of Arkansas looks the better athlete than teammate Duval Love. Love looks like a mauling guard prospect like Carl Nicks did.
-James Brewer is good on his feet, but looks to play very high. A project, but could be a good one.
-Ryan Bartholamew from Syracuse looks like a solid talent at C or is athletic enough to play G and pull well.
-Derrek Sherrod didnt look that great, but is more of an athletic OT than a physical player. I think he's a good project to work with and still has upside.
- Jason Pinkston disappointed me and looked like a guy that is gonna play RT or Guard. I thought he looks more athletic in games, but didnt show it in this group.
-John Moffat looks like a solid Wisconsin OG....but I think that is what Kraig Urbik looked like too and he never panned out here.

Thanks for the links Aussie. Fun time of year huh.

The notes I've gathered from the past two days.

OL Josh Davis didn't look good. Too thick.

Castonzo's build looks good.

Marcus Cannon carried his 358 really well.

Didn't like Brandon Fusco's body a whole lot. Know he added weight and it seemed to show. He did time well though so maybe it was justa bad angle.

Didn't like Justin Boren's punch in the mirror drill.

Carpenter didn't move well laterally. Also tweaked his knee.

Didn't like Adam Grant's bend.

Hudson was a reflection in the mirror drill.

Hankerson showed a really good burst in his 40. The 40 time was strong, 4.43, but I bet his 10 yard split was just as impressive.

Ricardo Lockette has a good body. Not just a track guy.

Greg Little had three do-overs in his two 40 runs.

Locker looked good throwing the ball. Had solid accuracy.

Tolzien has a thin build.

McElroy is getting his cast off tomorrow. Won't throw at his March 9th Pro Day but hopes to throw on a later date.

DeNarius Moore was very quick. Think he ran an offical 4.44.

Aldrick Robinson has short arms and small hands.

Torrey Smith had a great 40.

Terrence Toliver with a solid 40 for his size. 4.54 40.

Titus Young is still at 174. Looks skinny.

Mallet's interview with the media was blown way out of proportion. Not as bad as it was written. Politely said he would talk to teams, not the media, about the questions of drug use three separate times. Never yelled.

Marshall Williams struggled in the gauntlet. Jumped into passes, multiple drops.

Cecil Shorts plucked the ball well.

Cam Newton is obviously ripped. Great upper body.

Delone Carter has a good build.

Jon Clay's mid-section is sloppy. He dropped 30 pounds but didn't look to keep himself in great shape doing so. Slow 40 times and fell making his cuts in a drill.

Henry Hynoski came up lame in his 40. Left hamstring, in pain, did not participate in drills.

Da'Rel Scott with a 4.35 40 (unoffical) at 211 pounds.

I think his shuttle and cone drills were pretty good though. I care about that more than I do straight line speed.

Chidi, I would still take Clay with a 5th round pick. Not sure if he will last that far, but I still think we should have taken Blount instead of Dwyer last season. Clay is a good player with burst (not glide or suddeness :)) and I still think we need some RB depth.

Adam Grant is this years version of Adam Reynolds from UNC. Stiff is right.

Man it is painful listening to Cam Newton interview....he does not sound intelligent at all...

.

Kinda pulling for this kid since you don't see a "Fusco" at the combine and even in the NFL...it's personal. (He has my last name) :)

If Moore leaves then I'm for taking a RB (I've had my eye on Mario Fannin even before the Combine where he posted the second best 40 time despite being over 210 pounds - good pass protector with solid hands) but I don't think I can buy into Clay. Left school early knowing he was in the midst of being phased out.

It's good that Clay shed a lot of weight but to me, it looks like he shed it just to say he did without staying in shape while doing so. While a guy like Marcus Cannon loses a lot of weight and still looks good.

Lol, that's pretty cool.

Fusco had one of the best careers for any D2 lineman in history. And I want him to do well because he went to school less than an hour north of me. But from the one game I watched him and how he loooked (His numbers on the day were good though) I'm not real impressed.

Exactly. He might be the perfect book end to Miller. A great blocker with soft hands and quick feet. Might not outrun anyone but his tape showed that he could get seperation in the short field.

Thanks Aussie, I figured you could come up with them.

One name that stands out to me is Tyron Smith. Either they think he may really start to slide, or they are thinking of a serious trade up.

Aussie_steeler
03-04-2011, 12:40 AM
I dont think they have enough ammo to trade up to into the top 10 to get him.

I am intrigued with the 2 TE interviews. Not that they are happening, but rather are they checking out the other guys who will fall # 2 & 3 after Kyle Rudolph.

In my opinion Rudolph fits the mould of a typical steeler first round pick

1. Junior & young
2. #1 player at his position
3. Genuine value at the end of the first round

In the end I dont think that they could justify loading up at TE with Miller and Rudolph when there are other needs. ( but it wouldnt surprise me)

I still stand by my theory that Colbert will pick a junior to mould and sculpt in the first round. My junior list for potential picks at #32 is now

* DE/DT Muhammed Wilkerson (ranked #5 at DT)
* TE Kyle Rudolph (ranked #1 at TE)
* ILB Martez Wilson (ranked #1 at ILB)
* OLB Akeem Ayers ( ranked #4 at OLB)
* CB Aaron Williams (ranked #5 at CB)
* CB Brandon Harris (ranked #4 at CB)
* FS Rahim Moore ( ranked #1 at FS)
* WR Jonathon Baldwin (ranked #7 at WR)

I just cant make my mind up to make a mock. ( I might just have to make up 3 or 4 mocks until I settle on a #1)

Yea, just wishful thinking. It would probably would probably take this and next years 1st, and a 2nd and a 3rd. Do like that kid though, and, he's a jr.

Of that group I would think the most likely would be the two CBs, and Wilkerson. Rudolph would surprise me, but I've been surprised before.

If we hire Lake as Defensive Back Coach, he did coach Moore for a year.

I was happy to see they talked to Rodney Hudson. The kid is a technician and I think the 2nd best guard in the draft. The only thing I had against him was his size, and now he is pushing 300lb, and could add another another 10lb by TC, if we have a TC. Likely an early 2nd rounder, but at one time was figured to be a 1st round pick. If I can't have Pouncey, I would be happy with Hudson, or Ijalana, or maybe even Wisniewski, or Rackley.
