Speaking for the first time since the Steelers lost Super Bowl XLV, Kevin Colbert had a Q&A session with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine and met later with a small group of Pittsburgh scribes.
The director of football operations did not talk about the impending lockout -– and how it will impact the Steelers -– because of a gag order but Colbert touched on a number of other subjects. Here are selected excerpts from his media chats.
Q: Is the franchise tag you used on LaMarr Woodley just one step toward locking him up with a long-term contract?
A: “Both he and his agent are aware that at some point we want to do a long-term deal with him. The rest of the (potential free agents)…you know how we operate. We’re going to step back and ‘OK, we know we’ve got this with LaMarr.’ Now what could potentially happen, we don’t know yet.”
Q: Is there enough money to take care of Lawrence Timmons assuming you get LaMarr locked up to a long-term deal?.......
