What does the transition tag mean?

A Transition tag is used on a free agent...each team can have one transition and one franchise player per year. The team must offer the player with the tag a salary equalling the average of the top 10 salaries at the players position from the previous season or 120 percent of the player's salary from the previous year...whichever is greater.

The team then gets a first-refusal right to match any offer given to the player within seven days of that offer. If the team cant or wont match the offer, they lose the player and get no compensation.

Ike Taylor.

Completely agree. I don't even see another option...

I think we can get a long-term deal done.

I think it is a very good way to allow Ike to test the market- and yet be sure that we will retain him if we want him. Much better than just having him walked in with a random figure-Rooney's saying no, and him leaving.

Absolutely. I really hope the Steelers want to keep him on and give him a nice (but fair) deal. Imho - he's earned it.
