Might as well start a thread for Spring Training for the Buccos. There will be plenty of reports and videos to post. Here is a video that surely pumped me up for the first day of camp!

Why I'm glad you asked. They are brand new to Spring training (Batting practice jerseys). I got a sneak peak at them on Sunday. They are available at the Pirate's Majestic store at PNC Park... I'll be getting one..

Hey I love the Pirates just as much as you all. I love the players, the stadium, the hat/uniform, and the history, but with horrible ownership/management, the Pirates will not become anything. You can hire a manager who's been to the World Series, you can sign a couple of good players, but with Nutting, the team won't become anything. The MLB needs to step in and either force Nutting to sell the team or they need to take over for him. It's so frustrating when we're used to winners, like the Steelers, Penguins, and Pitt (football and basketball) or whatever your college is. The Pirates are the biggest joke of Major League Baseball and I'm sick of it. We've had eighteen straight losing seasons, what the fuck? Seriously, we shouldn't have to deal with this bullshit and I want Nutting out and I want a winning baseball team. I hope that we will soon see the MLB step in because I'm also tired about hearing rumors that MLB will step in, do something you idiots. You want to know how you can earn more money and have more competitive teams? Make it more competitive and make more teams better other than the Yankees, Red Soxs, and Phillies.

No way do you want Meek as a closer. He is not that good with the pressure. Joel will get it done. This is a great move.

Sdude, We are not supporting Nutting and his guys. We are supporting Pittsburgh, the Pirates history and the love of baseball. If I can't support them now then the last 124 years is for nothing. We have 5 WS and some of the greatest players in history like Wagner (Second only to Babe Ruth), Clemente, Stargell, Parker, Bonds (Even if he is an ahole), Maz and Van Slyke... It's for these guys and what they did for the team, city and us fans..

O don't get me wrong. Like I said, I love the Pirates just as much as anyone else and I've been wearing my Pirates hat all week long now that spring training is here. I also know none of you guys support Nutting as well, we all have stuff in common. :chuckle: I'm in the same boat as you with the history, five time World Series champions, they won twice before there was the World Series, and they have over forty players and managers in the HOF. I love them, I just wish we had a winning team. Anyways, here's a good question for you all. What's everyone's favorite Pirates uniform? Mine would be the 1990 away jersey:

Pirates want more consistency from Cedeno

Saturday, February 19, 2011
By Tim Povtak, Special to the Post-Gazette

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Shortstop Ronny Cedeno insists he didn't hear all the chatter -- he was too busy playing Winter Ball in Venezuela -- but when he arrived Friday for his first day of spring training, it didn't take long.

He is on the clock.

"It's a can-do league, and it's time for Ronny to do well for extended periods of time, and not just flash it," said general manager Neal Huntington Friday.

"He has to push himself. He has to be internally motivated to do the things he needs to do. He has to be more than just the guy who intrigues you with his skills. He needs to perform."

Tick, tick, tick, tick.

The Pirates failed to upgrade his position, but it wasn't for lack of trying.

They tried to trade for Jason Bartlett of Tampa Bay before he went for San Diego.

They looked at J.J. Hardy of the Minnesota Twins.

They debated the future of Cedeno in Pittsburgh several times this winter.

"I didn't hear anything [this winter]. I just came to play the position every day," Cedeno said before his first workout at Pirate City.

"If they want competition for the position, I have no control over that. I'll do what I have to do, and do what they want me to do."

What they want from Cedeno is consistency. He has the physical skills to be a better-than-average major league shortstop. What he has not yet shown is the mentality and the toughness to do it through the grind of a long season.

His attention wanders.

Yeah Cedeno was too inconsistent. Some games he would be error ridden and have a bad day at the base or go 3-4 and perfect in field. Gotta make up his mind.

"Paul's done some good things for this organization," said the GM. "We'll give it due consideration." The team holds a $9.75MM club option for Maholm's services in 2012 after he earns $5.75MM in 2011.

Coonelly On Budget, Draft Picks, Payroll, Extensions (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/02/coonelly-on-budget-draft-picks-payroll-extensions.html)

By Mike Axisa [February 25, 2011 at 8:20am CST]
Kevin Creagh of Pirates Prospects (http://www.piratesprospects.com/2011/02/interview-with-frank-coonelly-follow-up-from-piratefest.html) recently interviewed Pirates team president Frank Coonelly, who spoke about a number of hot stove topics. Let's recap...

If GM Neal Huntington wants to make a move that would cause the team to exceed its budget, whether it be a trade, free agent, draft signing, etc., Coonelly said "Neal and his staff will make a case for such a decision and I will then take that case to [owner] Bob Nutting. If Bob agrees that the case has been made and that exceeding the budget for the proposed signing will not hinder our ability to make the other investments that need to be made, he will approve the acquisition."
Nutting and Coonelly will bring the fans' interest into the equation if a trade involves a popular player, such as Nate McLouth (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mclouna01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) or Jason Bay (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bayja01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker).
"We need to reduce the compensatory selections so that the second selection of the club drafting first in the country is not 58 or 60 instead of 31," said Coonelly, with regards to the draft pick compensation system. "Now, [the Rays] received those selections because it lost good players in free agency but it is difficult for the draft to serve its purpose when there are so many compensatory selections before the second round."
The team would not be able to support a $70-80MM payroll right now, but they "will be able to support that payroll very soon if [their] fans believe that [they] now have a group of players in Pittsburgh and on its way here in the near future that is competitive."
Nutting told Rob Biertempfel of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/pirates/s_724517.html) that payroll is not dependent on attendance. "We're not artificially handicapped by extreme limitations on dollars, as we have been in the past," said the owner. "I don't see there being an artificial constraint as we move forward."
Factors such as track record, health, makeup, and character go into the decision about whether or not to sign a player to a long-term deal. "We need to be convinced that we can count on the player over the long term and that requires trust in the player as a person and as a teammate," said Coonelly.

Coonelly also spoke about his day-to-day responsibilities, minority partners, and how he spends his free time.

So, basically what they're saying (well Coonelly, anyway...the "Larry Fine" of the 3 Stooges) is that they want us to buy their crappy product before they'll spend more in payroll? Way to go, guys. Take a nice, heaping shit on the fans once again. It's all you know how to do.

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- The Pirates announced on Thursday that they agreed to terms with the remaining 27 unsigned players on the club's 40-man roster. All of these players have fewer than three years of service time.
The Bucs actually have 29 players on the roster whose service time falls in this zero-to-three year range, though Pedro Alvarez and Aaron Thompson already had contracts for the 2011 season. Thompson had his contract renewed by Washington before the Pirates claimed the left-hander off waivers.
Alvarez signed a Major League contract with the club when he agreed to terms after the 2008 First-Year Player Draft. In that contract, it guaranteed the third baseman $550,000 for the upcoming season.

The Pirates claimed Garrett Olson (http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=Garrett+Olson&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) off of waivers from the Mariners, the teams have announced.
Olsen, 27, posted a 4.54 ERA with 7.4 K/9, 3.6 BB/9 and a 37.1% ground ball rate in 37 2/3 innings of relief for the Mariners last year. It was his second season in Seattle after two seasons with the Orioles, the organization that drafted him in the first round of the 2005 draft.
Olson figures to compete with Joe Beimel (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/beimejo01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) and Scott Olsen (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/olsensc01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) for left-handed relief jobs in manager Clint Hurdle's bullpen once he arrives in Pirates camp. Kirby Arnold of the Daily Herald (http://heraldnet.com/article/20110318/BLOG05/110319775) first reported the claim.

Another scrub off the scrap heap that Dopey Huntington thinks is a "star in the making."

Just crossing names off getting ready for opening day. The Bucs are a young group and Atkins at 31 was not cutting it and going 4-31 is just playing ugly at the bat.

Pirates Notes: Doumit, Bowker, Rodriguez, McCutchen (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/pirates-notes-doumit-.html)

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [March 25, 2011 at 12:05pm CST]
The Pirates optioned Daniel McCutchen (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mccutda01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) to Triple-A and reassigned Sean Gallagher (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gallase01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker), Tyler Yates (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/y/yatesty01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker), Wyatt Toregas (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/t/toregwy01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) and Josh Fields (http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=Josh+Fields&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) to minor league camp today. Here are more updates on the Pirates from Florida...

Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review hears that the Pirates will not release Ryan Doumit (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/doumiry01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker) if they can't work out a trade (Twitter (http://twitter.com/#%21/RobBiertempfel/status/51293826773557248) link). Though Doumit will earn $5.1MM this year, the Pirates like his bat.
GM Neal Huntington told Pat Lackey of Where Have You Gone Andy Van Slyke (http://www.whygavs.com/pittsburgh-pirates/march-2011/whygavs-interview-neal-huntington-roster-decisions-and-the-draft.html) that the Pirates haven't focused on pitching in recent drafts, even though it might appear that way. The Pirates have just been selecting the players at the top of their draft board, according to Huntington. Pittsburgh picks first overall in 2011.
In a separate post (http://www.whygavs.com/pittsburgh-pirates/march-2011/josh-rodriguez-and-the-final-roster-spot.html), Lackey points out that John Bowker (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/bowkejo01.shtml?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker)'s strong spring has likely assured that Rule 5 selection Josh Rodriguez (http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker&utm_campaign=Linker&id=rodrig033jos) will be returned to the Indians.
Huntington told reporters this morning that the goal for McCutchen at the Major League level would be for him to pitch multiple innings as a reliever. The right-hander may return to the Triple-A rotation.

Doumit needs to go, he's not a great catcher (at all), but he is a decent hitter at best. He's too slow when it comes to throwing out runners who are stealing.

Well he isn't starting for sure. Like I said, he's a decent batter, but not so good of a catcher. Jason Kendall was the last good one we had.

Well I like Snyder over Doumit, but dammit one of them has to stay healthy.
