Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger considered abandoning the No. 7 jersey he's worn his entire career as part of a makeover he's undergone since his April suspension.
Roethlisberger told KDKA-TV in Cleveland he thought about changing his uniform number, but quickly dismissed the idea:
"That got brought up, and I thought about it for about five seconds and said, 'No way.' Because I wear it because that's me, that's who I am. One of the main reasons I wear it is because of John Elway, one of my idols. He's still one of my idols.
"You know what? I can make that change. On the football field, I love who I am on the football field and I think most fans would agree. I think they like that. That's not the person who needs to change, it's the person off the field and I don't wear a number off the field. I'm just Ben. And so that's what's most important is just changing Ben."
Roethlisberger spoke with two Pittsburgh TV stations this week and said apologized for what he called "dumb" and "immature" behavior. He said he wants to change his lifestyle and become as good a person off the field as he has been a quarterback on the field.
