PITTSBURGH --

Maurkice Pouncey has yet to play a snap in the NFL, but it appears the Steelers rookie already has the jump on some of his first-round predecessors.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said Thursday that Pouncey, the 18th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, is more mature football-wise than either running back Rashard Mendenhall or linebacker Lawrence Timmons were as rookies drafted in the first round.

"I think he has proven to be mature beyond his years," Tomlin said of Pouncey, who turns 21 next month. "His level of football of maturity probably exceeds that of some 20-year-old first round picks we've had in recent years, like Lawrence Timmons and Rashard Mendenhall."

The Steelers drafted Mendenhall at No. 23 in 2008 and took Timmons at No. 15 in 2007.

Pouncey, who Tomlin called a "pleasant surprise," will get the chance to start on the Steelers offensive line this season, most likely at right guard, but possibly at center.

Pouncey played right guard at the University of Florida before moving to center for the Gators.

He was awarded the Rimington Trophy in 2009, which is given to the player considered to be the best center in college football.

Wow every week there is an article about this kid impressing everyone. He is truly shining bright in the eyes of Tomlin. I just can't wait to see him on the field and see what he brings to our team!

This sure is some great news, albeit redundant, for our 1st rounder. I too cannot wait until I see this kid in the Black & Gold, on the field!

Wow. Even more mature than two guys who were considered very mature in their own right.

Dear Mr. Hartwig, The clock is ticking!

Does this mean we may see Pouncey start at center after all? Sounds good to me.

I really like this kid!! It's no wonder that Colbert said that he was to good to pass up on.

Let's all take a moment and pray he doesn't suffer from a lot of injuries in his career because that seems to be the only thing that will stop him from having a great career

I still dont think he starts at center this year unless there is an injury to Hartwig. Have to remember that Gerald McCoy said Pouncey was the toughest O lineman that he faced in his career.

The league will see how he compares to Nick Mangold who started as a rookie and has played every game (64) since 2006.

I can't wait to see how our o-line improves with Pouncey! It's the first time I actually got our #1 pick right in my predictions.... we really need this guy to excel.

The line was already much improved last season IMO and I think Pouncey coming in and starting at RG and eventually center will be a huge plus, im excited to see him get on the field!

I like Pouncey everything you read about him is good things. Unless he just tears everything up in training camp he will not start at the center position.
