A dazed and wheezing Ben Roethlisberger lay crumpled and crinkled on the unforgiving turf, seemingly in need of a trainer, a medic, oxygen, another line of work ... take your pick.
The year was 2006 and Big Ben had just had his bell rung by then-Baltimore Ravens linebacker Bart Scott, a moment Roethlisberger still calls the hardest crushing he has ever absorbed.
Roethlisberger’s response?
“Great hit,” he told Scott.
That’s it?
No swearing?
No slurring?
No emergency room visit?
No chance.
“Bart kind of decapitated him,” defensive end Trevor Pryce, then with the Ravens, recalled this week.
This was the type of bone-jarring blow Hall of Famer John Madden used to say would spawn “snotbubbles” from the victim.
More than four years later, Scott and Pryce, now teammates with the New York Jets, will be attempting to inflicted a few more “great hits” on Roethlisberger when the Jets smash helmets with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC championship game on Sunday.
Easier said than done..............
