Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith will return to practice this week, coach Mike Tomlin announced Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Smith has been sidelined with a torn triceps since Oct. 24, but the Steelers didn't place him on season-ending injured reserve in the hopes that he would recover in time to help the team during the playoffs.

With the AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets just five days away, Tomlin said if Smith is active, he likely will play a limited number of downs.

It would be nice to get him into the rotation this week but wouldn't want to get him back until he is ready to go.

I think our line is still really solid no need to rush Smith back. Still, He could be very useful even a limited role for us.

when your playing against top defenses and top rushing offenses, theres always the possibility of having your defense on the field for long spurts. if he has a good solid practice week, any snaps would be great to help keep the d-line fresh.

A few snaps during mop up time - just to get the rust off before SB XLV.
