Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger suffered a broken nose the last time he faced the Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 5.

And Ravens coach John Harbaugh had no problem with that.

Harbaugh said Monday he was pleased with the aggressive way the Ravens attacked Roethlisberger during the Steelers' 13-10 win.

Doesn't matter to me. He wanted his guys to hurt Ben. Just as James Harrison wants to hurt other players.

And I'm glad Troy nearly ripped Flacco's arm off while stripping him of the ball and leading us to victory....

The difference being, Troy was within the rules to do so.

And so the jawjacking from the Ravens begins.

Expect a whole week of big mouthing from the Ravens and the media collectively giving a big Baltimore blowjob. When they're not reaming up the Pats and Brady, watch them fall over for the Birdies.

Everyone thinks our Defense plays/hits hard now? Watch what happens if the ravens take another shot at Ben like they did. There will be gimped up purple jerseys rolling around all over the field.

No difference in what he and Harrison said.

He likes the aggressiveness. That aggressiveness led to Ben's nose being broken. Oh well.

Gotta say, I feel the same way about my Steelers' D. When it ends with some guy laying on the ground for a couple minutes, oh well.

According to Mike Golic, the follow up to that comment was, "was what Roethlisberger proved, though, is he can pass the ball pretty well with a broken nose". Heh. He also proved he was one of the toughest QBs in the league - and I, for one, wouldn't trade him for anybody else.

The entire quote is a compliment:

"I was glad we broke his nose," Harbaugh said, "and then I was very impressed that he played through it. Obviously, you can throw very effectively with a broken nose. He proved that."

Well, hell yes he's glad he got what he thought would be an advantage, and then he's impressed that our guy was so tough that he didn't grant one. Nothing to see here.

Exactly. Harbaugh's comment wouldn't have even raised an eyebrow back in the day. People who squawk about this comment by Harbaugh better think twice before complaining any more about all the flak Harrison got for his comment about wanting to hurt people.

Oh, good lord. Suggs would have paid $100k and served 2 games. Roethlisberger, Vick... who else? I hate to say Favre, but him... some guys will never, ever get the call. And others... Manning, Brady, and most of the mid-level guys, they get coddled.

TOOTH BE TOLD, STEELERS A PAIN IN JIM'S NECK
By GARY MYERS

Monday, December 30th 1996, 2:01AM

PITTSBURGH Jim Harbaugh didn't look so good after the beating he took yesterday from the Steelers. He showed tremendous courage just staying in the game.

Harbaugh stood by his locker after the Colts' 42-14 wild-card loss, and considering the pounding he had absorbed, that, too, was an accomplishment. The visible signs of the war he had been through: A chipped tooth in the front of his mouth, and welts on his chin and lip. Not visible: A pinched nerve in his neck that made it hard to move his head. Big hits that did big damage, all done on the Colts' first offensive series.

"It got to be a matter of survival out there," he said.

Did he survive? "My mouth didn't," he said. "I got some dental work that needs to be done. I got about 15 to 20 stitches in my mouth. I can't really talk."

Football is a violent game, and you derive satisfaction from crushing your opponent.

Just kidding
Clearly kidding around on Monday when he said he was "glad we broke his nose" while talking about Ben Roethlisberger, Baltimore coach John Harbaugh was surprised anyone took his comment seriously.

"Did you see the context of it?" Harbaugh asked reporters in Pittsburgh. "Go back and listen to it. You'll see it was in humor. It was in response to a humorous question and I was laughing. It was tongue in cheek. It was fun."

Roethlisberger's nose was broken Dec. 5 when Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata swiped at his head. Ngata, who was not penalized, was later fined $15,000 by the league.

Like Roethlisberger, Harbaugh played football at Miami University in Ohio, where he was a defensive back in the early 1980s.

"It was taken out of context if you ask me," Roethlisberger said. "I know coach Harbaugh. He's a Miami guy. Us Miami guys stick together, there are so few of us. On the field, before every game we kind of talk to each other, say hello, give a hug, ask how things are going. I don't think it was done maliciously at all."

Added Harbaugh: "I took the opportunity to praise him for how tough he is. I go back a long way with him. I've known him since he was a sophomore in college. I have tremendous respect for him. He knows we try to be physical. Pittsburgh plays physical and that's the way we want to play

This was clearly out of context, but even so, I hope the first time Ben has to get rid of a ball, he spots him on the Ravens sideline and fires a bullet towards his head.
