View Full Version : Dreaming of and Rooting for Best Possible Playoff Draw for Steelers

The Steelers (11-4) have already clenched a playoff berth and are in excellent shape to be the AFC’s No. 2 seed, thus receiving an ultra-important bye in the wild-card round and a home game in the divisional round.

However, the Patriots (12-2) are clearly the best team in the AFC and a matchup nightmare for Dick LeBeau’s defense so long as Tom Brady is healthy, evident by Brady’s 6-1 career mark as a starter against the Steelers (although that could easily be 3-3 if New England did not steal Steeler signals in two AFC championship games at Heinz Field and yes, I still believe those cheats should have an asterik placed beside two of their three Super Bowl wins).

Moreover, an ideal scenario would have the Steelers not playing the Ravens (10-4) or Chargers (8-6) in the divisional round and playing anyone but the Patriots in the AFC championship game, which would also be at Heinz Field if New England is ousted in the divisional round.

Here is what needs to transpire to give Pittsburgh its best chance of winning a seventh Super Bowl title..................

I really don't care who we play at this point. If both Troy and Aaron are back in the lineup, I fear no one, not even the Cheatriots*. Sure they kicked our hineys all over the field back in November, but I believe the Steelers can beat them in a rematch, especially if there is a Pats*/Rats matchup the week before - there will be some sore bodies in that Cheats* locker room after that game no matter how it turns out.

I'm going into the playoffs as I go into every regular season game - I BELIEVE. :tt02:

There is no "ideal" scenario.

Anyone of the AFC teams can beat the Steelers, and at the same the Steelers can beat any of them (Yes, even NE) Am I saying it'll be easy? Hell No. Is it possible? Most definitely.

Good read. I agree with the authors assesment and I too would NOT want to face the Chargers . . . part of that is due to parity in the NFL. To take the authors "dream" one step further - We lost to the Jets, Patriots, Saints - parity dictates that we win when next we meet . . . Ravens and Chargers are not a part of the parity equation (because we are 1/1 vs. Baltimore and 0/0 this year vs. San Diego).

Ideally, yeah, Baltimore loses today, SD doesn't make the playoffs and We end up getting the Jags in the divisional round. From there, we'll see . . .

The best scenario is the one that gives us the first round BYE, then I don't care. I look forward to playing the cheatriots* in their home. Would make the victory there that much sweeter. I believe that LeBeau will bring something he didn't in the first game in Pittsburgh.

IMO the Cheatriots* are back to there old ways. IMO they are stealing signals this year again. They are doing to much with to little for me to believe Tommy* is as good as he has looked this season. He has to have an advantage IMO. Bilicheat* and the Cheatriots* are doing it again but Goodhell won't punish them even if they are caught again IMO. Burn the tapes and keep in hush hush. SOP for the NFL.

San Diego (8-6) – Yes, the Steelers own the Chargers, San Diego has absolutely no run game, the injury to Antonio Gates takes away a key weapon, and all their big WRs are actually a good matchup for the Steelers CBs. However, this is the best defense the Chargers have had in recent years and Phillip Rivers would regularly and successfully pick on Steeler CBs Bryant McFadden and William Gay, sort of like any decent NFL QB regularly picks on those two.KC is currently leading the Titans 24-0. Once again, the Chargers have to actually, you know, QUALIFY for the postseason to be a threat. Only team coming out of the AFC West is the division winner this year and right now, that is looking more and more to be the Chiefs.

I agree. The Patriots definitely knew what was coming when they scored those two special teams TD's in the 2001 AFCCG.

Drew Bledsoe knew every call. That is how he went 10/21 for 100 yards and a touchdown. A career day for Drew. He never would have broken the 100 yard barrier without those magical signals.

And it's still helping them, even without it. Why? I dunno, I'll just throw it out there. Even though Brady could shred the Steelers D in his sleep, he has to be cheating.

What a bunch of crybabies.

(pssssst.....they were not "accused" of cheating. They WERE cheating. dont know how you missed that...it was in all the papers. Here's your sign.) We know they were cheating as early as 2001...so regardless of who was behind center...the Patriots still get a big *

Wait, a fan of the Steelers since 1976 calls someone else a bandwagoner?

And I'm curious to know, where did Belichick get those magical, game changing signals? The last time he even coached against the Steelers before 2001 was 1996, was as an assistant. So what you're saying is, the 2001 title game is tainted, even though Belichick has no prior defensive signals against the Steelers, Bledsoe throws for only 100 yards, the Patriots block a FG and take it to the house, and return a punt for a TD.

And there's also the fact that Brady has had his best two games against the Steelers after spygate, torching them for 400 yards in 2007 in a 34-13 beatdown, and then dusts them again this year for 350 and 3 TD's in another rout. Seems like spygate was holding them back, hahaha.

Fact Ben convicted of nothing just accused

Patriots really did cheat
"The New England Patriots have been caught using electronic means to steal signals and otherwise violate league rules, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3014677) reports."

http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/new_england_patriots_cheating_scandal/

Delusional thinking does not win arguements

Steelers SB wins = 6
SB loses =1
SB Win percentage roughly 85.7%

In the NFL's "modern era" (since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970) the Steelers have posted the best record in the league. The franchise has won the most total games, won the most divisional titles, earned the best winning percentage (including every expansion team), earned the most All-Pro nominations, and have accumulated the most Super Bowl wins (six) since the modern game started in 1970. It is 2nd overall in playoff wins and tied with the Miami Dolphins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_Dolphins) for most regular-season wins

The Steelers have a tradition of having a large fanbase, which has spread from Pittsburgh. In August 2008, ESPN.com (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESPN.com) ranked the Steelers' fans as the best in the NFL, citing their "unbelievable" sellout streak of 299 consecutive games. The team gained a large fan base nationally based on its success in the 1970s, but many consider the collapse of the city's steel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel) industry at the end of the '70s dynasty into the 1980s (and the resulting diaspora (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diaspora)) to be a large catalyst for the size of the fan base in other cities. The Steelers have sold out every home game since the 1972 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972_Pittsburgh_Steelers_season) season.

The Terrible Towel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrible_Towel), a staple of Steelers fandom, has been described by the Associated Press as "arguably the best-known fan symbol of any major pro sports team".[26] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers#cite_note-CopeDeath-25) Invented by broadcaster Myron Cope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myron_Cope) in 1975 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1975_Pittsburgh_Steelers_season) ,[26] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers#cite_note-CopeDeath-25) the towel's rights have since been given to the Allegheny Valley School in Coraopolis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coraopolis,_Pennsylvania), Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania), which cares for over 900 people with mental retardation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mental_retardation) and physical disabilities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disability), including Cope's autistic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism) son.[27] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Steelers#cite_note-AVSchool-26) Since 1996, proceeds from the Terrible Towel have helped raise more than $2.5 million for the school.

Patriots SB wins = 3
SB loses = 3
SB Win percentage 50%

The Patriots won Super Bowl XXXVI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXXVI), Super Bowl XXXVIII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXXVIII), and Super Bowl XXXIX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXXIX). They also played in and lost Super Bowl XX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XX), Super Bowl XXXI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXXI), Super Bowl XLII (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XLII)
They are one of only two teams to win three Super Bowls in four years (the other being the Dallas Cowboys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dallas_Cowboys) from 1993 to 1996). The Patriots rank third on the list of Super Bowl appearances (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Super_Bowl_champions) with six, behind only the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Damn! I missed all the fun. :pout:

Oh well, we all remember this ...

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Wide receiver Hines Ward suspects the New England Patriots may have had some type of inside information on the Pittsburgh Steelers before at least one of the teams' two AFC championship game matchups since the 2001 season.

Ward is certain the Patriots, while known for the thoroughness of their scouting under coach Bill Belichick, had some kind of unusual help before their 24-17 upset victory in Pittsburgh in the January 2002 AFC championship game. The Patriots went on to win the first of their three Super Bowls.

"Oh, they knew," Ward said Wednesday. "They were calling our stuff out. They knew, especially that first championship game here at Heinz Field. They knew a lot of our calls. There's no question some of their players were calling out some of our stuff."

I don't care what the matchup is. The post-season Steelers are going to be a more complete unit than we have been in the regular season and we'll have the weapons to defeat anyone. AFA the Patriots*, even our loss to them is a blessing; we had the opportunity to learn from our mistakes. We won't be coming at them the same way this time.
