18 members in Canton. 6 Lombardi trophies. It's gonna be a tough job picking out the top 10. Even a first-year inductee might not be able to crack this list.
So what's your guess for how the list shapes up?

Here's my guess:

1) Jack Lambert
2) "Iron" Mike Webster
3) Terry Bradshaw
4) Lynn Swann
5) "Big" Ben Roethlisberger
6) Hines Ward
7) Jerome Bettis
8) L.C. Greenwood
9) "Bullet" Bill Dudley
10) Greg Lloyd

Hated to leave off Ernie Stautner, Hines Ward, John Stallworth, Mel Blount, Mike Webster & Dermonte Dawson. I personally emphasized Big Game players and big Play players.

I sincerely think Troy is underrated if thats even possible. Best overall athletic football players I have ever seen. (Please do not give me Deon Sanders)

Franco is way under rated as he was the offense until Terry got his act together with Swann & Stallworth .

1. Joe Greene #1 Steeler- Without him there would be no dynasty. 6 SB rings.
2. Franco Harris- Immaculate Reception and SB IX MVP. 4 SB wins.
3. Jack Lambert- Cowboy killer. 4 SB rings.
4. Mel Blount- He has an NFL rule named after him. 4 SB wins.
5. Terry Bradshaw- 4 Super Bowl rings and 2 SB MVPs.
6. Mike Webster- The anchor of the OL for 15 years. 4 SB wins.
7. Troy Polamalu- Makes more game changing plays on defense than anybody in the last 20 years. Could be the best S of all time, although 49er fans may dispute that claim. 2 SB wins.
8. Hines Ward- All time Steeler's receiving leader and toughest receiver in the game. Super Bowl MVP. Sets the standard for a clutch catching and blocking WR. 2 SB wins.
9. Ben Roethlisberger- The most clutch QB since John Elway late in his career. Passer of the greatest catch in SB history. Immaculate tackle. Two SB rings. Toughest QB in the league. A winner since he first took the field and the youngest QB to ever win a SB.
10. Lynn Swann- The largest highlight reel of any player of spectacular catches occurring mostly in the Super Bowl. A SB MVP and has 4 SB rings.

I watched Ronnie Lott play basically his whole career out here, and I'm not disputing it. Lott was 95% equal to Troy, maybe a little tougher and better against the run ... but Troy routinely makes plays that I've never seen ANYONE make, ever. I swear, the guy must have the ability to slow down time. I keep saying that, but it's practically the only explanation.

I think it's because of how he works out. Troy trains to be an acrobat instead of a football player and it shows on the field.

I got about 25 that you could make a case for the Top 10 - and probably 15 that could conceivably be in the Top 5.

The only think I know for sure is that whatever the NFL Network comes up with will be wrong. :chuckle:

Extremely difficult list for me. You could do a top 50 and I'd still feel like I was leaving guys off. Here's what I came up with.

1. Joe Greene - The player that got the dynasty rolling for us.
2. Jack Lambert - Epitomized the Steel Curtain Defense.
3. Terry Bradshaw - Overcame early career struggles to turn into a 4 time champion.
4. Franco Harris - The hero on the Immaculate Reception. It's been uphill ever since then.
5. Lynn Swann - Came up big when it counted most.
6. John Stallworth - Can't have one without the other. Also had some big plays in Super Bowls ('79 vs the Rams).
7. Mel Blount - When rules are created because of you, you deserve to be on the list.
8. Mike Webster - Nasty center who proved everyone wrong.
9. Jack Butler - 52 career interceptions in a shorter span than any other defensive back in team history.
10. Lynn Chandnois - One of the all-time leaders in return yardage. Doesn't get remembered due to playing in the 50s.

Shell and Ham were the last two I left off.

1. Mel Blount - They changed the rules to keep him from being so dominant.
2. Troy Polamalu - We're world beaters with him and a losing team without him. How often do you see one player make that much of a difference?
3. Mean Joe Greene - They built the Steel Curtain around him.
4. Franco Harris - All time great running back and changed the direction of the franchise.
5. Jack Lambert - Centerpiece of our great linebacker corps, a tradition that has continued nonstop
6. Terry Bradshaw - We know better than anyone what a franchise QB means. The great defense of the 1990s never won a Super Bowl and the QB position is the reason.
7. Hines Ward - Best all around WR ever.
8. Rod Woodson
9. Mike Webster
10. Jerome Bettis

OK, so I watched the NFL Networks "10 Greatest Steelers of All Time". As everyone knows, a lot of great players had to be left off. So here's the list according to NFL Network.

1. Joe Greene
2. Terry Bradshaw
3. Franco Harris
4. Rod Woodson
5. Jack Lambert
6. Mel Blount
7. Troy Polamalu
8. Hines Ward
9. Lynn Swann
10. Jerome Bettis

I have some issues with this list and I know some of you probably won't agree but here goes. First, Mike Webster is NOT on the list. I personally would take Rod Woodson off the list and give Iron Mike a spot. I hate that Jack Ham and John Stalworth aren't on the list so let's just call them #11 and #12. I think Bettis should be ranked higher and so should Lambert. So here's what I think the list should look like.

1. Terry Bradshaw (He's a QB with 4 rings for crying out loud, how is he NOT #1 on this list ?)
2. Joe Greene (yes, the heart and soul of the Steel Curtain so well deserving of #2)
3. Jack Lambert
4. Franco Harris
5. Mel Blount
6. Troy Polamalu (worlds better than Woodson IMO)
7. Hines Ward (has there ever been a WR like Hines?)
8. Jerome Bettis
9. Lynn Swann
10. Mike Webster

We could have a field day with this list. I agree with the mike webster assessment in that he needs to be in the top 10. However I cannot agree with Rod Woodson being your fall guy.

Dropping the #4 player totally of the the list is not correct IMO. I actually would drop Bettis off the list for Webster.

I Remember that Rod Woodson was actually good enough to make the 75th anniversary NFL team as an active player. Jerome would not have even have made the top ten RB's on that list.

Jerome carries a huge spot in most of our hearts as a very good player but Rod was truly a great player. A player who made grown men look like boys in both the coverage and return aspects of the game.

This debate is sure to go on forever and most of us will love to debate it as long as we live. The joys of being a steeler fan. Merry Xmas

Agree a little with both of you. No way Woodson should be ahead of Mel Blount - and probably not ahead of Polomalu, but that could be up for debate.

I'd also drop Bettis to make room for Webster somewhere on the list.

Don't agree with Bradshaw over Mean Joe Greene. I'd put Mean Joe first and then debate Lambert and Bradshaw for 2 and 3.

Merry Christmas.

I loved Woodson, but he's not a top 10 guy in my book. As far as DB's go, he's behind Blount, Polamalu, and Shell as far as Steelers go. The reason why is that so many of his great seasons happened in another uniform, which is different than so many other Steelers that should be considered for this kind of list.

Also, the Steelers won without Woodson in the lineup. There is clearly a dropoff without Troy the lineup.

Seriously, as for the #1 position, Mean Joe Green was the heart and soul of the Steel Curtain, and tough defense was what we were known for, but HOW IN THE HELL is the #1 spot not given to the QB who won 4 Super Bowls and was TWICE Super Bowl MVP ? As much as I love Mean Joe Greene, and I do, TB deserves the #1 spot of all time greatest Steelers.

Just watching this now....Funny how George Atksinson called Swann "soft" after all the hits he leveled on Swann. Yet Swann goes on to get the SB MVP in SB X after a bloodbath w/the Raiders in the AFCC. It's no fun hating the Raiders of the present day. There are no asshats like Atkinson on today's Raiders.

Lambert should be #2. Mean Joe #1 because he started turning the franchise around and he was the face of the Steelers. I think when Lambert threw Cliff Harris to the ground in SB X, that was when Lambert became the heart and soul of the Defense and the team. Mean Joe was the heart and soul of the city.

Woodson and Blount's positions should be reversed. Webster should be in and Troy off. I don't think you can put a current player on the list so Troy and Hines should be left off and put a pre Super Bowl era player on there.
