By Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers fired kicker Jeff Reed Tuesday because of his erratic performance on the field this season or his erratic behavior off it or some combination of the two. No matter the reason, coach Mike Tomlin made a bad mistake. If he had brought in kicker Shaun Suisham to challenge Reed, make him feel a little less comfortable and bring out the competitor in him, that would have been great. But to flat out release Reed? The team will be worse off because of it............

I guess hindsight is twenty twenty and only time will tell if we made the right move.

Can't say I disagree with Cook here, but it's too late to cry over spilled milk. Skippy is gone and Sushi is in. I hope this reactionary move doesn't come back to bite the Steelers in the ass this season.

I still think a less than adequate Jeff Reed is still better than a less than adequate not Jeff Reed for the remainder of the season. Especially this season. If this was last year, what difference would it have made. Can this kid handle the gaming winning FG in a playoff game or a playoff clinching game better than Skippy?

this is why the coach makes the big bucks. no one knows if its a right or wrong move, yet. coach knows what he's doing. he evaluates these guys more than anyone. lets see how it plays out.

In professional sports is all about what you've done for me lately. The fact is that Reed was 15/22 on FG attempts this year for an abysmal 68%. Add in the fact that his kickoffs typically come down around the 10 yard line and you've got a high paid kicker who isn't doing his job. Skippy has no one to blame but himself for getting cut.

The Steelers couldn't count on him to get the job done and that's why they got rid of him.

I'll wait a few games before I make any decisions as to whether or not it was the wrong move. This happens in pro sports all the time so I'll wait and see.

While I'm very unhappy with Reed's performance this season and even part of last season when he missed a couple crucial ones, I really have a bad feeling about Sushi. He couldn't keep a job with the Skins, and when landing a job in Dallas, he gets cut for a guy that is horrible. Color me nervous.

So far this season Reed has NOT proved himself to be clutch or even good....give someone else a chance, even if this guy blows there was a good chance reed woulda sucked the rest of the year too.

IMO good move.

:iagree: Reed definitely hasn't been himself this year and has shown little or no potential for changing back to the kicker we've come to know and love. But in this day in age in the NFL it's do your job or go home. And Skippy just wasn't doing his job to the standard.

I wish Tomlin would make some other coaching decisions in regards to the poor play on the OL and CB's. If he feels the kicker isn't up to par. Fine. Make the move. But there are other players on the team who are playing just as badly or worse than Reed was kicking.

I agree. I see no upgrade here. Hope I'm wrong.

I think a guy who may not be that great in suisham who is coming onto a new team and gets a chance for that "fresh" start has more potential to do better then a guy who has been struggling all year. It would probably be harder for the guy struggling to all of a sudden snap back to being good again. Just a thought.

"All he does is kick field goals." Cris Carter, Earl Holmes, et al. There had to be something else going on we haven't heard about.

Cook is just up to his usual M.O. Writing something negative to sell some copy.

Reed was kicking about as bad as Kris Brown was a decade ago, but Brown was allowed to try and work thru it because he didnt spout off about the turf, the fans, the cops or the towel dispenser. Reed ran himself to the waiver wire with his mouth more than his leg.

So basically, the FO tendered him with the franchise tag to determine whether they could justify the pile of money they had to relegate for a kicker by saying "Put up, or Shut up"... and he did neither.

Kickers are much easier to replace during the middle of the season.

I thought the "standard is the standard" and there should be no dropoff in play no matter who is in there.
We have "starters in waiting"

Whatever.

I think that is a misinterpretation of that quote. IMO, what he meant was that they don't treat players like 2nd or 3rd teamers. Instead, they have the same expectation on everyone. It DOESN'T mean all 53 players are of equal talent.

Cook is right that Reed did a lot of good for the community and had a good career with the team. Especially in this day and age, kickers don't hang around too often.

Of course, that would contradict the point Cook made of "not making it personal". As good as it is, what you do for the community or what you did for the team in the past is largely irrelevant.

I also disagree with the thought of bringing in another kicker for competition. Rarely do you see two kickers on a roster unnless one of them has a booming leg and will be used as a kickoff specialist. Reed nor Suisham are that type.

We will never know how Reed would have finished the year. All we can judge is his performance this year, which is lacking. Perhaps there is a real attitude problem in the locker room or on the sidelines, that we are not privy to. He will probably do better elsewhere, because whatever got into his head here, will be removed. Here's hoping Sushi gets the job done.

I was hoping the Steelers would give Reed another chance, but I can't really fault them for not doing so. Reed just ran his damn mouth too much. Never a good idea for a kicker, but even a worse one for one in a slump.

I agree. And that's why I believe there is more going on than what we know. Gay is more of a detriment to the team than Reed was. Yet Gay will still be there screwing up Sunday. Either Reed did something we don't know about, or his outburst after the Patriots game was the final straw.

I agree with Cook completely. Reed was a solid kicker for 8 years with the Steelers and he had his off games, but he was clutch and made the big kicks when they mattered. Seems premature how quickly we dumped him on the side and picked up a kicker who is more than likely not an upgrade which could haunt us late in the season.

I pick option 2. There has to be more to this story than meets the eye, for Reed to be outright cut. My guess is after he blasted the organization in the summer for not negotiating a new deal and franchising him, he was on a short leash. His struggles this season coupled with Sunday's outburst gave them the reason to pull the plug on him.

Yep. The way I see it, they've been looking to get rid of him ... and he gave them a reason to do so. I just hope it doesn't bite us in the ass.
