• The Steelers plan is to keep veteran defensive end Aaron Smith off injured reserve ... for now. Smith was told the organization wouldn't place him on the season-ending list unless the team is hit with a slew of injuries at the defensive line. Smith had surgery to repair his injured triceps nearly two weeks ago and is expected back in eight or nine weeks. He could return for the late December game against the Panthers.


• The Steelers signed defensive end Sunny Harris to the practice squad after the Buccaneers plucked defensive lineman Al Woods off the Steelers' practice squad Wednesday. The Steelers also signed linebacker Chris Ellis to the practice squad after the 49ers claimed linebacker Thaddeus Gibson off waivers. The Bills recently released Ellis.........................................
