View Full Version : George Pickens Deletes All Steelers Posts; Writes “Free Me” On Social Media

Steelers wide receiver George Pickens seems to be venting his frustration on social media regarding his role within the team’s offense.
On Friday, Pickens posted a message on his Instagram story, stating, “Free me.” This comes after a win against the Titans where he only managed to catch two passes for -1 yards, which followed a 1-catch game in a loss to the Jaguars the previous week.
Pickens’ social media antics didn’t stop at the “Free Me.” post, which he quickly deleted. He also deleted several other posts, related to the Steelers, from his account.
Notably, Pickens apparently also unfollowed everyone associated with the Steelers, including quarterback Kenny Pickett, coach Mike Tomlin, and the team’s official Instagram account. He even swapped his profile picture to one from his high school days, removing any reference to the Steelers.

This is what happens to shotty loser teams. If I were a young guy with his talents I'd want to be playing for a real offense and a winning team.

typical WR diva. You shoulda drug your left foot George. Atleast Tomlin good for fixing drama, that’s his strength.

Or, Pickens could stop being a me-first selfish jagoff and be happy that the team won the game. All he had to do was get the other foot down and he could have had a TD.
The Steelers (5-3) are a winning team.

More often than not this lasts for like a day and means nothing. I think it was Cam Sutton or someone a year or so ago. And it turned out to be literally nothing.
One of the "big" things was that GP wasn't following KP. Apparently, he may have not been following him to start with.
Kyler Murray did a big social media tizzy and now he's coming back early to play for the Cardinals.

But when there’s already a pattern, both in college and in the pros, it means more than a random occurrence. I just think the guy is a head case who cares more about his stats than winning. Not a great building block.

Pickens just had a negative 1-yard receiving game. What receiver with his talents would not be pissed off? If he keeps two feet in-bounds on the TD this does not happen but even then, it's laughable he has not been involved enough the last two weeks. Stop wasting talent.
If only Kansas City selected two picks before Pittsburgh. The NFL would for sure be in hell.

Players want to win but the players with star talents want to produce. Money, individual awards matter.
Jamar Chase just called out Joe Burrow a few weeks ago for not getting him the ball. This happens a lot more than fans think.

Good points.
I think it's hard to know motivation from our point of view.
I did want to acknowledge that I wasn't saying that Desert Steel was wrong. He may be totally on target.
We just can't really know.
Personally, I'm not sure I really care one way or the other.
Either Pickens puts it all together or he doesn't. Only time and whatnot will tell.

He's got a point about the shitty offensive system. Maybe the front office will realize there is fallout from having a loser like Canada in charge that goes beyond just throwing away a couple seasons.
But they won't realize and will probably extend him. Hopefuy we get more than a 3 and a 5 for Pickens.

I was actually thinking the exact same thing. Cam is the dude that set’s teammates right, if they can be set right.
Also DJ is a pretty good mentor. For whatever faults he might have he is a team first guy and super hard worker.
Pickens has better hands and is more talented, but DJ is a guy he can learn from when it comes to precise route running and proper attitude.

Guys as talented as Pickens are just gonna do stuff like this because they think they should always have the ball.
As was pointed out Chase did it. I just read this morning about how CeeDee Lamb did it. I think AJ Brown has done this is in the past. Stefon Diggs just pitched a whole fit this preseason in Buffalo. I think Tyreek Hill got all grumpy in the past at KC.
Doesn't mean we, as fans, have to like or respect it. But....it just seems to be the cost of doing super-duper talented WR business.

People think thst Swann and Stallworth were not "me" guys. I mean they became great teammates but they wanted the ball as much as anyone else and were jealous if the other guy got more targets. They would bother Bradshaw to throw to them.

I shudder to think of the revised reputations of some of the players of previous eras if there was social media, the internet, and a total lack of a filter by NFL coverage guys. In addition to there being no internet, you can read about how reporters used to just not talk about aspects of players and whatnot because they didn't think it was relevant or appropriate. Now, we get breaking updates if a guy farts sideways.

This will only get worse! You may appease him a game here and there but it will gradually get worse, this is why WR position is a very fragile position. The kids have enormous talent but shit for brains usually.

Not surprised, guy is being held back by the offense, he wants to make the pro bowl, cash in on his next contract, probably a better way to go about it like privately venting his frustration to the FO, but I understand the frustration. He’s probably not the only one, just the most public.

I don't buy it. I think.it was a ton of selective reporting. That and guys likely didn't talk about it because the teams quite literally owned them.
I know it's not football but I read about how Mickey Mantle used to party all night in his hotel. Everyone that travelled with the team, including reporters knew. But no one said anything because everyone felt it wasn't a useful story.
Sports has always been mostly myth making. There was probably stories about how some gladiator just did it for love of the game not like the diva gladiators that did it for their freedom.

So they partied and drank, Bobby Layne was a notorious partier. They still had a better sense of loyalty to the teams they were on than players today. It wasn’t about being ‘owned’ by the team. Guys left when they needed to but chasing the buck or championship was more frowned upon then than it is now. If you had a me first attitude you were gone pretty quickly. Noll didn’t waste his time with Roy Jefferson - even though the guy was perhaps the only pro bowl caliber player he inherited. But those kinds of things were not nearly as common as they are today.

Being that there was no free agency, leaving was not a player decision.
I don't think people's attitudes change all that much about stuff that involves money.
Players were motivated by money and individual success just like today.
There just wasn't the outlets for reporting it. All that got talked about was the good stuff.
If there was a PFT in 1973, we wouldn't feel the way we do about these guys from previous eras.

It was nothing like it is now, players stuck with their teams because of the structure of the league true, but there was also more of sense of loyalty to the team and city. That’s not really the case anymore, except for a few stars that a team will hold onto. Pittsburgh is actually more like teams of the past than today, in that many of the players still stay connected to the city.
Today, we probably couldn’t sustain a dynasty because of the cap and me first mentality, if we don’t fix the offense do guys like Minkah or JP Jr or even TJ stick around? Probably not, I really don’t blame them either. But the players and teams had a pretty different mindset 40 plus years ago

Look up "Mackey vs NFL". The players union in the 1970's sued to get rid of the Rozelle rule that basically limited free-agency, for more pay, and a few other things. Basically that case and at least one other was brought by the players to get the NFL in trouble for violating the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. Their central claim? Players not being allowed the freedom to sell their services on the open market.
Players believed in this so strongly that at least two (Mackey and QB Joe Kapp) fought the owners over contracts and right to move and won in court but lost in the NFL as, I believe, neither played again.
These dudes wanted cash and freedom of movement. They just took 20 years to get it as things wound their way through the courts and a series of CBAs.
But players were not "different" they were just not as visible and things were not reported. For instance, I doubt it was reported that the owners told Mackey and the NFLPA that "we don't need football but you do" and attempted to force them to sign a bad agreement. I'm sure it was just reported that the union was greedy or something like that.

Almost all of the top draft picks/HOF'ers did not want to play in Pittsburgh. Once they started winning, yes, they figured out what it took to win. But, when they were young in the first couple of years in the league, they were not happy to go to Pittsburgh.

He has the talent to be a superstar but he doesn’t play like one. He doesn’t think like one. Hes not used like one. Superstars are on the field most of the game, Pickens is not yet. Superstars don’t make boneheaded penalties that cost their team multiple times. Pickens has. Superstars are the go to guy when the game is on the line…Pickens isn’t on the field in all those situations. All of those things can change but as of now, he’s just potential.
