KP8 comes through again in the 4th. DJ gets his first touchdown since Big Ben. Hiccups aside, Canada wasn't awful.

No real goats in my eyes.

Officials were dog garbage again.

Bad...GP not getting his feet down. KP missing throws and costing us points. Although 4th quarter KP came to play.

Good...DJ had a pretty good game. Finally found the endzone. Najee and Warren ran hard and had a little bit of space to work with. Broderick Jones played great besides the bonehead penalty. Pass protection was solid along the whole line. Defense made great adjustments at half time to limit the Titans offense. Matt Canada called a pretty damn good game. Still work to do, but the offense was moving the ball tonight with some consistency.

We’re undefeated with Matt Canada on the sidelines. That’s obviously the key to victory. :)

Rookie class is looking special.
JPJ has some dumb penalties early but he shut down Hopkins. Followed him on both sides.
Jones looked really good at RT.
Benton was creating pressure.

Canada I thought called a good game. Pickett missed a lot of easy throws, I would blame it on the sore ribs but some of these throws are layups

Johnson finally caught a TD!!! Felt like it was forbidden.

Pickens not getting his toe down on the TD smfh, that never happens. 2 catches, negative 1 yards.

Refs bad.

Goats are all the stupid penalties that almost gave away the game

Balls are the rest of the game, def came together to cover for missing MF, OL blocked decent and when holes were opened the RBs ran hard

Annoying is the lack of use of GP and poor play calls during stretches that made no sense

Heroes:

I'm going to give Canada some props for today. He opened some things up today and created some opportunities for points. Let's face it, Pickett hit 3 receivers with passes that should have been touchdowns, only 1 was caught.

The offensive line was better today. Jones on the right side was a Godsend. Chuks has been bad. What an upgrade!

The RBs ran hard and were effective today.

Benton was very good all game.

Goats:

These refs are killing me. It's not that they are just calling penalties. It's when they call them, and how they only seem to be calling the questionable ones on the Steelers. They continue to call ticky tac penalties on the Steelers. The Titans were tackling TJ Watt all game. Literally wrapping their arms around him, grabbing his facemask, taking him to the ground, or going horse collar on him....with no call. Numerous other penalties that could have been called that seemed to go above what they called on the Steelers. Just frustrating as hell as it continues into this game.

I'll post more another time but here is why Jonrs has to start somewhere. He got beat on a olsy in the 4th but he stayed in contact with tye DL and fell on him. Warren soun out and made a grain. Chuks doesn't do that.

Peezy...great in coverage. Avoids tackling at all costs. I'm fine with that though for now. I expect he will improve in that area.

That's what is known as the "James Harrison Treatment." Only difference being that Goodell has never personally and publicly targeted Watt as a "dirty" player the way he did Harrison.

Watt will probably be selected for a urinalysis 7 weeks in a row per the NFL's "random" drug testing policy next.

I have to give props to DJ. With the Steelers, it can be an ultra fine line between winning and losing, and one of the most crucial plays was that 30+ yard catch he made against good coverage on third down to keep the winning drive alive. I’m pretty sure the difference between that being a catch and a deflected pass was the fact that DJ waited until the last possible moment to put his hands out.

It’s those little things that can end up being so huge.

Heroes: Highsmith and Kwon.
Goats: Lots of mental errors by several.

KP is not a franchise QB, but he's clutch in the 4th. If he was a pitcher, he'd be the closer in the 9th.

You know, when I first heard that the Steelers were moving Canada from the coach's booth to the sidelines I thought "So what? What difference does it make?". But then I saw that it gave Canada the chance to talk to Kenny personally during the game and show him stuff on the laptop about what the Titans defense was doing, and also to talk to other players on the offense about what the offense was trying to do and what their roles should be. So maybe it wasn't such a bad idea after all.

Here's a horrifying thought, Sullivan is a worse coach then Canada.

Heroes
The OL. Their best performance by a country mile in 2023. Please, please, do not send Jones back to the bench. I have been a Chuks cheerleader over the years....but I've seen enough. He is what he is and it isn't what this team needs. He would be better served to play on a pass-wacky team.

Porter. I was shocked at how good he was in coverage. I never saw him play in college because college football either makes my blood boil or puts me to sleep....but if anything, he was under-hyped pre-draft. He uses his hands a lot, but it isn't because he is grabby out of lack of control or fear of getting beat...he is jockeying for position all the way through the route. His ability to force the WR to come through him at the top of the route to get to the ball is really advanced. He's gonna play for a long time.

Benton. I do watch UW games on occasion and this is a the Benton I wished we could see at UW. Many suspected this was in there....but not at this level! His pass rush is just something that rarely got used as a Badger. I shudder to think what Benton is going to do when he gets some NFL experience and strength & conditioning. Benton's pursuit, even if he didn't get there in time to make a tackle, was also really high last night. He was on the screen on almost every play.

Highsmith. I know the splashy stats aren't eyepopping, but this guy is impacting games and gameplans. He was in Levis' pocket on almost every passing play. Totally outclassed Dillard...I guy my dumb-ass wanted Weidel to bring with him from the Iggles.

Goats
Safety Play. I get that these guys were being told to not get beat deep. I get that they were worried about Levis playing mad bomber. But, sheesh. They gave up too much ground on every single passing play. The Titans OC just killed them on using deep routes to get them to chase and then hitting intermediate under it. Maybe this goes to Austin or the DB coach....but you just can't let an offense change your defensive shape that much.

Coaches. And not for why you think. But this has long been a complaint of mine. They need to play guys earlier. Why did it take this long to get JPJ into the starting line-up? Why did the OL wait until now to get Jones in? I liked that Rush got some sub-package snaps - -dude looks like a condor out there. He made some mistakes....but he is fast as heck and needs to play to figure it out. To stay mostly positive....I think that it could be that the younglings only looked this good because they were brought along slowly? I mean they did that with Martavis Bryant and only unveiled him when he was ready to be the destroyer. But....that is a luxury that playoff teams can afford.....500 teams? Not so much.

I, of course, have many KP thoughts....but I am not going to get into them this week. In the gameday thread, I totally forgot his ribs were all squished up. That could very easily be the explanation for everything last night. Combine his 4th quarter mindset with another shot of fun chemicals at half-time and I can kinda see why it went how it did.

The big question is will Tomlin sit Jones again after the punishment of Okorafor is lifted next week? I'd say there's a strong chance Tomlin will do so, unfortunately.

Game Ball:

4th quarter Pickett. DJ, Warren. Watt and Highsmith.

Goat:

None.

-------------------------------------

Officials . . . I didn't like some of the calls, but I remember them being called both ways. I'd take bad refereeing that is consistent on both sides rather than good refereeing outside of a couple of mistakes, but continually against one side.

Yep , the penalties evened out. I still hated both roughing passer calls. Looked like legitimate tackles. Game ball goes to O line. No sacks and first time I saw legitimate holes for backs. Honorable mention to Warren. KP missed 3 throws badly and GP should’ve got both feet down easily. No turnovers a plus. Although moving forward I’d take a pic if it meant throwing downfield more. Cost of doing business. I like KP but a little envious of Titans getting levis . Dude has great arm and when he learns to check down like the 4th down sideline play WR got hurt , he’s gonna be good. I think opposite for KP, too many check downs.

Played a pretty bad team and won , oh yeah barely. So nothing has changed . Although Tomlin is finally winning the games you're supposed to win

Well the team isn't playing well and they are winning. They have been out gained in their 8 games.

"Elias Sports Bureau noted the Steelers are the 34th team in NFL history to be outgained by their opponents in each of their first eight games of the season. They are the first of those 34 teams to have a winning record after eight games. They have been outgained by 790 yards in total and they've been outscored by 30 points"

Any other coach they are heading towards having the #1 pick.

Does that coach have Matt Canada as the play caller? and Pickett as QB? if so, I highly doubt that.

Game Balls - Presley Harvin continues to play at a high level. I’d have to give one to Matt Canada. Called a good game but he still, has to go…even if he strings together 8 more great games…still gotta go. TJ Watt, Najee. Warren, O-Line.

Goats - Officiating across the league and college is horrendous. It’s really so bad. Pickett, Pickens, DBs, LB Coverage, Austin.

I saw a couple of places this week across Steelers internet where people still want Harvin gone. And I have no idea how someone can still say that based on this season alone. Yup...he was inconsistent and frustrating before...but this year? He's doing his job pretty well. I guess he had the one that would've been ugly if not for a great roll....but still....

As much as I love TJ ……he whiffed twice …..setting the edge. He does need to understand his position. I’m certain he thought….”oh SHIT…. I have to go get that guy””.
