"You've got to say Charlie's in the pole position"

"We're going to be thoughtfully non-rhythmic here"
Referring to his planned rotation of running backs this season

"Everybody with a helmet on is in the mix."
Answering a question at the close of the 2010 Steelers training camp about which players would be playing

"We'll always have open arms for the Commissioner when he chooses to come to training camp."

What Tomlin said about the failed 2 point conversion: "I'm not pondering hypotheticals"

Also regarding officials: "I'm not evaluating officials. I want to keep my money in my pocket."

On calling the league on behalf of Cameron Heyward: "I've got enough calls to make"

On Landry Jones performance: "He's a professional QB. We aren't going to throw pep rallies or parties"

I'm brand new to the site and it looks like a good one. I just want to say that I was EXTREMELY disappointed with Tomlin for bringing in Vick, but, at the same time, I recognize that he is a very good football coach. Reading these "Tomlin-isms" reveals that the coach is an interesting and colorful character. I was a huge Tomlin supporter before Vick, and I think I can warm back up to him again.

Whenever he says "the standard is the standard," that's a good thing. We said that in the Army. It means that everyone is subject to the same rules and there are no favorites. The standard is the same regardless of who you are. I believe Cowher was weak in this regard. Cowher clearly had favorites who could do no wrong or were treated differently if they did.

Oh well. I'm sure the B&G will manhandle the ponies today in Pittsburgh and I'm looking forward to watching it.

Combat catches

Second-year receiver Martavis Bryant’s ability to run past opposing defensive backs has never been in question. His ability to make contested catches in traffic has been.

So when Bryant outfought Denver cornerback Aqib Talib for an important catch when the Steelers were deep in their own territory it was a positive sign for someone who has struggled to make those plays.

“We want consistent combat catches not only from him but all the guys,” Tomlin said. “That was a very positive part of Markus Wheaton’s game. We’re going to need that from all the guys. When called upon, we expect those guys to deliver plays for us. Some of those will be sticky and all of those guys have the skill set to deliver those types of plays.”

LOST CAUSE

Tomlin's record against sub-.500 teams at the time they played them over the past two years (4-7) has come under scrutiny.

Tomlin said that's something he would look at during the offseason.

“Really, I'm in the midst of this 2015 season,” Tomlin said. “Painting with a broad brush and looking over the course of an extended period of time and things of that nature, that's stuff you do in the offseason. So we'll do it at that time.”

Coach Mike Tomlin updated the team's injury situation following the loss to Philadelphia.

“During this particular course of the journey, you have an opportunity to learn about yourself in terms of how you respond to adversity. I also believe this week we’ll get a snapshot of this group’s resilience and its ability to respond to injury because we have a number of guys who won’t be available to us for a number of reasons."

We weren't ready to scrap the plan. We want to show some mental fortitude and show commitment to the planning and give guys an opportunity to work out of self-inflicted wounds.”

Mike Tomlin defends onside kick

“I know analytically they probably fall in the lower percentages and things of that nature,” Tomlin said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. “If I err, I’m always going to err on the side of action in an effort to win. My guys know that about me. I think more importantly them knowing that about me, they expect that from me. I don’t fear failure. I’m going to do what’s required to pursue victory, even if it comes across as unconventional. I’m certainly not going to steer away from decision-making for fear of ridicule. Those guys put a lot on the line when we step into stadiums to play. I, in turn, am responsible for putting a lot on the line and embrace doing so. I understand when things don’t work out and the criticism that’s associated with it. I embrace that. But I go to work with men every day that lay a lot on the line when they step in stadiums as well. I’m just going to provide the same efforts that they provide me.”

His answer, like his decision, still doesn’t make much sense.

Mike Tomlin quotes: What he said, what he meant

By: Brian Harker

Mike Tomlin is one of the best coaches in the National Football League. He’s never had a losing season, and is known for being someone that guys respect and love playing for. Tomlin is equally known for the things he says, which are commonly referred to as “Tomlinisms”.

Tomlin is quite the wordsmith and has come up with many great sayings over the years. In this series, let’s take it a step further by telling you what he meant when he said them. Here are the first five of his many memorable sayings.

You can seek comfort by eliminating some of us from that conversation or you can assign blame by highlighting others. But the bottom line is, man, there’s more meat on the bone for all of us,” Tomlin said. “And we all got to look at what we’re doing and the quality with which we’re doing it. The offensive line is no different than anyone else, player or coach, in that regard.”
