I'm hopeful it stays that way. Bud isn't worth it. Anything more than vet minimum is a waste. Highsmith is averaging twice as many tackles per year than Bud and Bud doesn't stay healthy.

What does Highsmith have to do with needing a #3 OLB?, which is what Bud will be here, or anywhere else he decides to go?

Not surprising. Bud was never going to be anything more than a rotational player if he came back. Time to move on.

Not even sure why he would show up knowing that he would be in rotation…did they lead him to believe he would start over Highsmith? [emoji23]

Maybe he flunked physical? Which would be weird - why would show up if you are still injured? Also, possible he wants to try hook with a team to be a starter and the Steelers simply told him, good luck, and the door is open if you don't find what you are looking for.

My guess is that it was all about the money. Bud knew before a showed up that he would be the #3 guy. It always comes down to the $.

It might be one of those situations where the Steelers told him to explore what else is out there and then get back in touch. But, to quote Bill Parcells, "If you're looking, we're looking."

I think that might be the issue right there. At least, I hope so as it leaves the door open. I'd love to see him back at a #3 position.

IF he knows going in that is his role and to not expect more than 15 snaps a game unless injury or overtime then he could see more ... last thing we need is another guy who comes in thinking "I'll show you , and doesn't " then get upset he isn't getting the snaps

I wouldn't even have confidence he could be a #3 OLB, a rotational guy who plays 15 snaps a game. Seems more like a guy who'll be on the injured list 50% of the time while a street free agent is your #3 OLB by default.

Dupree will likely have to wait until after the draft to sign. But suspect he will either sign a cheap one year deal with a contender to ring chase or he’ll be back with the Steelers on a reported two year deal that’s really a one year deal to rehab his value all over again.

I'm still confused that some people really like the idea of getting Bud back to be a rotational player. Why? He's not gonna take a lowball contract and he's not worth spending any real money on. His production numbers when he WAS healthy were never all that impressive. For the type of production he's likely to give you, there are cheaper and younger FA linebackers you could pick up. As a matter of fact, they shoulda just resigned Malik Reed. He averaged 40 plus tackles and 5 sacks a season the 3 years he was in Denver and Miami signed him away for just 1.25 million for 1 season.

They did exactly what you laid out. We re-signed Jamir Jones as the #3. Signed Quincy Roche to be the #3. Tried to bring Bud back on a similar deal as those 2 to compete for #3. The thought is of those 3 guys, Bud would have been the better option as the #3. It would appear Bud wanted more money than what the FO offered. No deal. I'm thinking the fans that didn't want Bud back should be happy with how things turned out. In any case, the Steelers have shown they are still looking for a #3 OLB.

Dupree is a Falcon.
Makes a ton of sense for Dupree. One year deal. Awful pass rushing team. If his knee and back hold-up he will play a ton of pass rush snaps. Potential to rehab his value and then get one last shot a higher $$$ contract.

Sucks they could not get a deal done. This team has zero edge depth. Now they have to draft one

It's like anything else. It was all about how much he was willing to play for and how much playing time he would get. Both sides couldn't find an acceptable number to make it work. It would have been great if he was willing to play for a reasonable contract, but that's just how the NFL works.
There is still the draft and the pre-season roster cuts to sign a player that can help.

Remember that the preseason roster cuts don’t happen like they have in the past. It’s not going to be as easy to get a guy, get him in and up to speed as it has in the past.

No, but it should be interesting. We could see some players, that we all thought would make the team, get cut for somebody else's cast off. It could be an interesting couple of days after that last and only cut. Of course, I'm guessing that some teams will still start cutting some players before the deadline anyways.

Good luck Bud. Thought it was happening. But have a weird feeling it’s all for the best.

It’s likely to work out like 7 out of his 8 seasons as a pro. Less than good.
