So this used to be the quarter pole of the season. Now it is the 23 and some decimals % pole of the season...but anyway.

Thought it would be fun to do a one good one bad for different aspects of the team so far.

Cam Sutton may not be the biggest or the fastest CB but he is certainly the smartest. He's now getting INTS by just running off his coverage to the spot of another coverage. Playing really well.
Arthur Maulet is unplayable as CB in my mind. As soon as he has to turn and run with someone, it is over. Some no-name guy for the Jets cooked him over and over again. He plays well in run support, but problem is, he isn't a LB. He is a CB. And I wish they would've cut him this off-season. Random UDFA CB would be preferable. Might still be awful but at least it would be a guy with potential. Maulet is never getting any better. I hate that he is on the roster so much. Another example of a philosophy that refuses to acknowledge that this is rebuilding not a surprise contender team.

Alex Highsmith is playing really good football. Always impressive to me when a player adds things to his game every year.
Robert Spillane needs to not play on defense. Why is he the dime linebacker? He can't cover NFL players. All teams do is find him (or my fav Maulet) in coverage and just take the completion for a first down and move on. Again, a rebuilding team should be playing Robinson or some other vaguely promising LB in the hopes of hitting gold.

Warren is wonderful. Sure he has some fumble concerns, but what a revelation as a UDFA RB. I can't remember the last rookie RB that has looked this good in pass protection.
The bad on offense has been talked about too much already.

Gunner needs to go. He can't run. He can't block. Now, he can't catch punts, and he makes poor decisions on when to let them bounce? I'm out. I'd cut him tomorrow and give roster spot/role to Sims and then see what CA3 looks like when he's healed up.
Boswell is just a marvel. Wonder how long he has to keep this up to generate all time numbers?

Oh Crap!

I forgot about Leal. Holy smokes! Remember when there were whispers that he might not have been a good use of a draft pick? Not so much from you all, but from the "internet draft knowers". He might be the next cornerstone of the DL.

I liked Leal from day 1, he's gonna be a good player

Why do I get the sense if the Steelers cut Gunnar, his ass would end up back on the Patriots** and have an all pro year as a special teamer. :chuckle:

Good - KP is now the starter after Tomlin FINALLY realized that MT was terrible after 3.5 games of zero offense output. Whether KP is the next franchise QB or not remains to be seen, but at least we can find out what we have now.

Bad - our team can’t seem to put together a good phase of any part of our game in any week aside from week 1 (great ST and Def, zero offense). Ever since that game we have had dumb penalties on offense and defense at the worst times, ST mis-ques that have directly led to points and defense failures in the 4th quarter of every game.

The good news is that Watt returns soon, which should help our defense immensely, and KP should make our offense better going forward. I am looking for a solid run in the second half of the season, unfortunately we needed to win more of these first 4 games. Maybe we can sneak in a couple more wins (Miami with no Tua and Bucs who are banged up)?

Good - Alex Highsmith has upped his game.

Bad - Offense is still a shit show.

The o-line in the past couple weeks has looked capable of opening running lanes. Also they've done a good job pass blocking. Totally much better than I expected after seeing them in the preseason.

man look at this block by Pickens at 0:03 :o

he brings a lot of nasty to that WR position in terms of blocking ability, i freakin love this kid now

Good - Leal looks sturdy on the DL and is likely a keeper.
Bad - Our depth players are not going to become starters, and it looks like we are getting run over by the Old Age Truck NOW, not 2 or 3 years from now.

Bad - The defense looks pedestrian without Watt.
Good - It is really evident this guy changes the game like no other since Polamalu, and he's not out for the season.

Good - Pickens looks like a legit #1 receiver right now, Johnson has stepped up, and our TE duo is the best we've had in a long time.
Bad - Claypool has turned into the football equivalent of that guy who always takes unnecessary fadeaways and bricks most of them.

Good - The offensive line is improving with every game and slowly inching toward acceptable.
Bad - Nothing bad, I expected this to be terrible and it's not.

Bad
Even with Watt back our run defense is still wanting. Bush is just not helping against the run and he more often than not seems a day late and a dollar short on making plays. That's what it looks like watching. Always near the play but more often than not, not making it. In addition Jack, Spillane and guys on the DL seem to not be able to consistently get penetration and stop the runner. they always seem like they're on their heels.

Good
O line is getting better and the running game looked better in the second half against the jets. Maybe KP's passing will open the offense up, it looked promising in the last 2 quarters.

Bad: 1-3
Good: we’re one game out of first in the division

As a side note: I know people are high on Highsmith and he’s got 4.5 sacks so far, but weren’t 3 of those with Watt? Since Watt’s injury AH has been less effective and hasn’t really picked up the slack. Our Pass rush has been weak. seems like he’s the juju of our OLB’s, not that effective without the star player next to him

No one will be as effective without TJ Watt next to him. I think he’s at 5.5 sacks.

Yeah he's at 5.5, .5 off the lead. He had TJ the past two years, so why wasn't he racking up double-digit sacks then?

Learning progression?

at least he's been on a learning progression - Jarvis never got on one

Now Highsmith has to learn to get sacks without TJ, maybe they should send more than 4....

One bad thing: Pickett replaced my husband
One good thing: The guy who replaced my husband, threw three picks.

My God!

Fans want to get Maulet out of coverages, send him on blitzes all game long. Hopefully bring some 'Hilton' effect.

Good .... Pickett finally getting a chance to show his talent.
Bad ..... Watt to me seems 'injury' prone and maybe should be trade bait. He seems to be getting to the point of NOT being there when needed. Just my opinion.
