He's not happy in SF (who would be in that city, but I digress) ... and wants out. He's entering the final year of his rookie contract ($4.9 cap hit) so he's probably going to want crazy money next year. But if we could trade for him at the right price it allows you to force DJ into playing hard this year for a new contract and you sign the one who plays the best this year letting the other walk.

Thoughts?

I personally think he's better than DJ and wouldn't mind locking him up as a #1 for the next 5 years.

The cost to acquire and the cost to sign long term is too expensive.

That's the kind of player you go after when you're trying to win the championship, not trying just to not suck. He'll want starting QB money and the 49ers will want a first-round pick, and both will kneecap our efforts to reload. Plus they might just not trade him and then franchise him next year.

Every team would be foolish to not be "interested" but there's not any way to make the price work. The team has actually done a masterful job at reloading and just needs about one more offseason to be basically "just a QB away" - and it's already quite possible we sacrifice that to try for a QB now.

The Steelers aren't above a painful QB search. You know that meme of the Browns jersey with all the QB names on it? It's not like between Bradshaw and Ben we didn't have one of our own... imagine that with Malone, Bono, Stoudt, Blackledge, Brister, etc... and get ready to see it again unless we hit the jackpot on somebody.

agreed , unless they would accept DJ straight up for him ( doubtful ) and we could negotiate a long term deal prior to the trade that equates to the money DJ wants ( doubtful too ) ....

I would be ok with that , but do not believe it will happen

I’d rather keep Johnson. He’s by far the better receiver. Samuel had one nice receiving season, partly because he was catching passes out of the backfield…he really hasn’t proven himself as a number one receiver.

Deebo single handedly took their last playoff game over and won it. The guy is an absolute monster that SF used as a RB and WR because he is that good. I would take him in a second, but we are not going to, especially after taking the Ravens castaway.

The reason he wants out of San Francisco is he doesn’t want to play from the backfield because of the toll his body took last season. Also, San Francisco isn’t going to give him up. Just like Pittsburgh isn’t trading Johnson, the Titans aren’t trading Brown and the Seahawks aren’t trading Metcalf.

No. Good receivers are abundant in this draft.

to get Deebo - not only do we have to pay a price to get him (ie top draft pick) but also pay him top salary as if he’s a free agent. So give up a first round pick just to have negotiating rights to him. Not worth it

Yep, I'd like to get him to but the team has to many needs, to invest in one player.
